Apparently it's a thing now to give a Teacher's gift on the first day of school?

My kid is going into kindergarten this year and we're supposed to (friends are head of PTA & very cliquey) give the teacher a gift on the first day now. I'm fine with small things at the end of the year, but this seems like a bribe to me.

Teach my kid better than the other kids, because I got you that $25 gift card to Total Wine.

teachers spend a fortune on that kind of stuff. So I'm okay with a supply wish list. A personal gift for the teacher? That's going overboard at the start.

Or even to WalMart.

That way they can buy what is most needed in their class room.
