Beware of calls from 212-465-9832- Phishing scam

It starts off as an automated call, identifying as "Credit Card Services", informing you that your ability to have your credit card interest rate reduced is about to expire. Press one to speak with an agent to take advantage of this offer or press 2 to let the expiration occur.

I've been getting this same call, off and on for close to 5 years now. Seems to cycle every 3-4 months. Before we moved a few months back we had "land line phone service" through our cable provider, which let me block several numbers. We moved outside the service area of cable and went satellite, (a whole 'nother horror story), and got cell phones rather than the half assed land line available.

Now these bastages have gotten my cell # and have been calling me 3-4 times a week for the past month or so, even though I've, more than a few times, pressed 1 and told the "agent" I am aware he is phishing, it won't work on me, and nicely asked to be removed from the call list. That I've googled the # and did reverse look-ups on his #, the results clearly showing it's a phishing scam. I've pressed 2 to let the offer expire, to no avail.

So today, they call again. I press 2. 9 minutes later they call again. Now I press 1. I tell the "agent" I am aware he is trying to rob me and asked if his mother knows he is a common thief, which triggered an immediate ear blistering volley of profanities.

This guy couldn't tell me my name, or my account number, yet claimed to know my interest rate was too high.

There is Nomorobo https://www.nomorobo.com/ but I am not sure how good the cell phone support is yet.

We have it for our landline. Works well.

I tried Nomorobo on the Comcast/Xfinity land line we had... No go. One didn't support the other.

4. Looks like blocking for cell phones isn't ready yet

I had to register, giving my provider and cell model number, to be e-mailed at a later, undetermined, date if I'll qualify.

5. I have a samsung 6. To block a number, I go to the call log and hit the button in the top

right of the screen.

Done. Nothing to do with the phone co. It's done through the contacts and calls log in your phone.

7. Mine is just a basic

Verizon LG flip phone, with no block feature. Verizons website says they don't offer call blocking in my area, as a network.

6. On another note, I've been getting emails from a guy named Brian Gaddy....

he wants to know if I'm the one with cupcakes, do I take credit cards. I get the same email every few months, he uses [e-mail] and it doesn't come up on any scam lists or even on google. He sends the same message to me and others.

What does it mean? Is he an alien? A zombie? An alien cupcake zombie? I'm so confused.

And why does he keep sending me the same email, and WHY does he send it to random other people?

10. The IRS scammers keep calling and threatening to have me arrested

If it weren't a robocall I would just tell them to send the cops and get it over with. I'm tired of their stupidity. As it is, I just report the number to the FCC Do Not Call list and cuss at the recording on the scammers' calls.


You realize any time you press a number in their menu you are just confirming they have a "live" number and keep it on their list? The thieves will never remove you from their list so long as there is a remote chance they can get something from you.

Find a way to block the number, or add it to your contacts as "scammer" and don't answer it at all.

13. Using landline now, I don't pick up on any caller I don't know

Those calls go to message, so if I'm home and screening I can pick up for a legit caller and delete junk messages.

15. I can no longer read the numbers on the display without glasses

Too often those calls come in when I'm sleeping or doing work around the house so I can't check the number ahead of time.

Plus, since this used to be my business line and I now use it as a contact number for the embroidery group I am president of, I have people from all over the country that need to reach me. I wouldn't have their numbers ahead of time.

It's also the number the Democratic Party has to contact me so they can ask me to volunteer.

The last and most important part is that it is also the contact number for my mother's caretakers and the assisted living facility where my mother in law is living. I have to pick up every call in case one of the people associated with them is trying to reach my husband or me.

Too many of the people that call do not leave messages so I really can't let the machine pick up if I am here.

5 scammers arrested in IRS impersonation scheme

Treasury Department investigators have filed criminal complaints against five individuals in three states, accusing them of fleecing nearly $2 million from more than 1,500 victims as part of a scheme to impersonate IRS agents.

According to criminal complaints filed in Minnesota, Arkansas and Texas, the five individuals pretended to be IRS agents, threatening jail time if their victims didn't pay up.

CNN first reported on these scams a year ago with the story of a radio talk show host and former NFL player who lost thousands of dollars.

The criminal complaint filed in Minnesota says two of the alleged scammers managed to collect nearly $250,000. They got $180,000 in just four days at MoneyGram locations in the state.

The five suspects were arrested in Miami on May 23, according to the Treasury's Inspector General for Tax Administration.

EVER forget you.

Just keep hanging up the instant you get their call, or better yet, just don't answer it.

I never answer calls from numbers I don't know. If it's important, they can leave a message.

I've never missed an important call yet.
