Moon Day Every once in a while, the human race achieves something truly remarkable, and Moon Day celebrates the occasion when we first left footsteps upon our nearest neighbor. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/moon-day/Space Exploration Day The origins of Space Exploration Day date back to man first walking on the moon, with the day itself first observed to commemorate this historic event during events held in the early 1970s. It is about more than just the moon landings though and is intended to pay homage to the incredible achievements of the past and fire up enthusiasm for the benefits of space exploration efforts to come in the future. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/space-exploration-day/
National Lollipop Day Do we really need an excuse to celebrate the humble and wonderful lollipop? Enjoy Lollipop Day responsibly; dont go too overboard on the sugary treats, and remember to brush your teeth! https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lollipop-day/
World Jump Day Many ideas are floated to help combat global warming, and World Jump Day is one of them. The aim of the day is to shift the orbit of Earth, to extend daylight hours and to create a more standardized climate throughout the world. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/world-jump-day/

(38,958 posts)I recall watching on a tiny (probably 13" B&W TV set. We didn't get a color TV until sometime in the mid 1970's if I remember correctly. It was an amazing era. The Mercury and Gemini crafts (as well as lots and lots of F-4 Phantoms) were built not too far from where I lived at the time by McDonnell Aircraft. It was a nifty time for a kid growing up that liked airplanes and aviation.

(205,467 posts)Who knows when or if we'll ever do it again? And it was probably later than that when we got a color TV. My Dad was an engineer, but not all that interested in keeping up with technology. We had the same B&W Zenith for years, it's probably still in the basement.
But the space program was big news and we followed it closely as kids. I even remember them bringing a TV into the classroom in elementary school so we could watch the space launches...

(38,958 posts)My maternal grandfather's second wife worked at McDonnell in some secretarial capacity, but she never revealed much about what she did. At one point in the 1950's I was told she was sent to California for and extended period to Edwards, but again nothing was ever said as to what it was about. He had passed away in 1947 and worked for Curtis-Wright at St. Louis Lambert Field during WWII, I was told building engines as he was too old for service.
My Mom wanted a color set much earlier, but as a single Mom she had all she could do to keep the family finances going and she did a great job doing a great deal with almost nothing beyond a huge stack of bills.

(205,467 posts)When I was really little, we didn't have a TV at all. We used to go to my aunt and uncle's to watch. The way I understand it, my mother had to talk my Dad into finally getting one. I was a little kid, she was expecting my brother, and she didn't drive yet (she had to learn when we moved up north to the mountains - no public transportation) so she was really stuck at home. Your mother deserves a lot of credit. It was even tougher back then.

(28,394 posts)The moniker Full Buck Moon symbolizes the time of the year when male deer, known as bucks, start to grow their new antlers. While this nickname is most commonly used, it is only one of the many lunar names for this month's full moon. [The Full Moon: Why It Happens | Video]
July's full moon has also been called the Full Thunder Moon and the Full Hay Moon, as July is considered to be the season with the most frequent thunderstorms and the time of year when farmers harvest, bale and stow hay for the upcoming winter.
