A Kansas City Quandary

This afternoon I accepted an offer from my company to transfer to Kansas City. A promotion comes with it. Yay. But now I have to relocate on short notice. Yikes.

My office will not be too far from the Kansas/Missouri state line. So I could settle in either state. Politics aside - any advice from those familiar with the Kansas City area? If you could start fresh and pick either side of that metro area, which side would you choose and why?

It will make filing taxes simpler and that's more than enough reason for me. If you want to bring politics into it, MO has a Dem governor and a Dem senator along with KC proper being a blue city.

Another consideration would be to investigate which areas in the metro, such as KC, MO and some of the Kansas suburbs have Google Fiber service. You can obtain 1 GB/s and numerous cable channels for around $70-80/month before taxes of course.

Plus that side of KC is a little nicer. I would pick the MO side. But it's up to you.

lived on the Mo side - and worked in both Mo and Ks.

I definitely would live in Mo.

KCMO is a great city - Nelson Art Gallery, professional sports, college sports, great food, the Plaza, several local colleges and jr colleges plus major universities in easy driving distance, etc.

The only downside, in our opinion, was the weather. It can be downright cold in the winter and blistering in the summer.

There are some great public schools on the Ks side, and some nice suburbs. However, the politics would keep me away. The Mo side is very blue.

Not sure of your life style, but if urban - look in the Plaza area. Nice parks, eating, shopping. If more suburban - nice suburbs surround the city on all sides. We lived north.

In a year we will buy something downtown. But I am looking for an apartment for my first year.
