A Prime Day is coming up, so I'm thinking about it.

(51,122 posts)The media offerings are lackluster and low tech compared to all competitors.

(5,790 posts)I'm thinking about the Holidays. All of the family is on the East Coast and we are in the Midwest. Usually, we get consumables with a shipping deal (Omaha Steaks, Usingers, HoneyBaked).

(22,252 posts)Now I don't have to do that, plus I get the streaming too.
I joined Prime and paid the fee when I bought my first Kindle because I got a discount if I did.

(115,702 posts)I order enough that what I pay for Prime very quickly covers the shipping costs, so for me it's a good deal. I'm old and I hate shopping so I do most of it on line anyhow.

(855 posts)I probably don't buy things more than once a month or so (except around Christmas) but you don't have to wait until you collect enough to qualify for free shipping (which then takes forever). When you think of it, you can just order it. If you forget something, just make another order. You also get the free TV & movies, free music and a free Kindle book every month. I don't have any of the button things (i.e., run out of laundry soap, just push a button to order more) but it would probably be a big savings if you wanted to do that.
I've had my membership for less than a year but I intend to renew it when it runs out.

(5,790 posts)I order the occasional book, and my kids have Kindles.
...but sometime on or about Thanksgiving I make 6-9 orders, all of which need to ship. Four of the orders are $75-100; two are $50-75; and the rest are in the $20-25 neighborhood. Oh -- and people are having kids, so there is likely to be more going forward.

(1,728 posts)I live in a small town that doesn't really have a lot of the stuff I like. So I spend a lot of money on Amazon.

(12,655 posts)Not everything that you might want to purchase is on Prime, though.

Oh, they have a "Prime Pantry", where Prime members can purchase and ship groceries, pet supplies, and low-cost household care items to any address in the US for $5.00. Sort of a "pay it forward" service if you know someone who doesn't have a budget that allows them to make it through the month. That's actually pretty nice.
So ultimately, I'd say it depends on what you'd go to Amazon to do.

(12,655 posts)Stuff you normally see in the Sunday Coupon Connection. But it looks like there's student discounts available. Basing the prices on typical California grocery store prices, the cost seems reasonable if you're shipping to a kid away to college or a family member out of state.

(47,552 posts)I'm looking forward to the holidays.
I'm gonna try going 100% online for kids gifts. (I hate shopping for toys.)

(53,410 posts)I have tendonitis all over my body and it's very hard on me to have to stand or walk a lot which you do when you go grocery shopping. It's also very hard to carry heavy groceries up a flight of stairs so I'm pretty much forced to shop for groceries online.
Amazon delivers when they say they will, which is usually the next day and they will leave the groceries on your doorstep in big green bags which are very light, have packs of ice in styrofoam for fresh and frozen food. All the bags are very light because they never pack them too much. You keep the bags until the next time you order and then you can leave them in front of your door for them to pick them up the next time you order.
My experience with them is far better than with Safeway or any other grocery delivery I've tried.
I also order a lot from Amazon because of the tendonitis. It's just too rough on my body to stand or walk too much without having to stop and sit. And the extra pain will last for days if I do it too much.
Amazon is great!

(29,503 posts)The free films on Prime Video, the free shipping on certain orders ...
I will say that with regard to their pantry, the prices seem high to me, but then I live in the NY metro area with tons of shopping options, like Costco, Walmart, and all the neighborhood ethnic places. If you live in a food desert or an area like that, or if you have mobility issues, then it would probably be worth shelling out the higher prices.
On Prime Video, they recently started partnering with some of the high quality entertainment providers like Starz, as add-on subscriptions. So yeah, I fully intend to rejoin as a member when my membership expires in December.

(88 posts)We try not to do business with Amazon, but there are times when the prices can't be beat. Prime wasn't worth it. There wasn't enough on the streaming to make it worth even a dollar and it's easy enough to get free shipping without paying an additional fee for it.
A big NO from here.

(95,337 posts)So along with the free 2-day shipping you get for one year access to Amazon Prime TV shows and movies.
They also have excellent first run TV Shows like Transparent and 'Mozart in the Jungle'. Nice thing about AP is that you pay once a year instead of monthly fees.
