(53,410 posts)I just keep finding out whole new things about them!
I'm becoming quite proud of the fact they're our national bird! Their caring and devoted to heir young, even to taking care of the runt of the flock quite well, by making the bite sizes for it smaller than for the other eaglets so the eaglet can swallow it, and they're obviously great and inventive hunters too! I can't wait to find out more about them. they also mate for life. I wonder if that isn't some important survival instinct.

(23,239 posts)...while diving after the same fish. One managed to fly away, but the other one was knocked for a loop. I think it nearly drowned, but was finally able to pull itself out of the water, and struggled to fly to a tree on the shore. It looked pretty pitiful up there...Quite a sight!

(4 posts)Great Video* I have actually seen this, here in the San Juan Island's. At first I thought the eagle was hurt as I watched it swimming against an incredible current. I got my binoculars to see if it was in distress and was going to take my boat out to save him/her. Then was told that once they have prey their talons lock on? It took the eagle about 30 min. to get a huge salmon to a spot where it could be drug ashore.
I will never forget the amazing strength I got to witness that day.....

(5,061 posts)A bird that makes its living snatching prey out of the water would have to be able to swim, even if it isn't as strong a swimmer sas something like a cormorant, pelican or albatross. Still, doesn't seem too happy about doing it.
I saw one of these two months ago here in Durham. When I was a kid 40 years ago, we never saw bald eagles in the Carolinas, so it's great to see such a beautiful bird come back.

(54,256 posts)And I've never seen one on the ground.
We have them in the neighborhood.
NEVER on the ground.
ALWAYS inflight or in a tree.
That is the best video I have seen in a very long time. Nature is so awesome.
