(1,186 posts)There was a sit-com on CBS about 1990 or 1991, Mondays, I think. It lasted maybe four weeks and was not very good. After the cancellation was announced they played one final episode which, IMHO was one of the funniest shows ever on TeeVee.
The plot centered about one of the lesser characters who (as a standing joke) couldn't keep a job and always found some way to screw things up. She lands a job as a personal assistant to a professional athlete and suddenly everything clicks. She's totally professional.
Anyway, she comes to work one day and the athlete tells her that she has only two errands to do that day, take the car to get it fixed and wash the dog. Anyway, she gets confused and washes the car and gets the purebred, rare dog fixed. The follow up was priceless!
Can anyone remember that show? THX.

(15,164 posts)That was on when I was about five or six and there are no words to accurately describe how addicted I was to that program. I even forced my parents to record most of the series on VCR (I've still got a few of them I think, although I can't vouch for the quality). Of course now you can find most of them on YouTube. There was a time when I'd almost memorized every line from every episode -and I am only slightly exaggerating because that's how much I used to watch and rewatch them! Even now, over twenty years later watching them on YouTube, I am amazed how much of it I remember!
Ironically, had I lived in Australia where I do now, I would never have seen this show as it wasn''t shown here. But I lived in SE Asia where my dad was working at the time and, the local television station showed it. I converted quite a few of the kids at school to watching it as well!
I especially loved Paul Winfield as the Mirror. He was hilarious!

There was so much more to those characters that was waiting to be explored and shared, and it's still disappointing to me (all these years later) that this show will never get a conclusion fitting its brilliance.

(29,414 posts)That is, according to their reasoning on why to cancel it: people had to pay attention to it. They couldn't be doing something else, with it on in the background because they had to actively pay attention to what was being said and shown. To the suits, that was too much to ask of your average American TV-watching audience.
I guess they also don't seem to have a problem, then, with the fact that people are not paying attention to the commercials! You'd think they would have noticed that flaw in their statement...

(15,774 posts)Martin Mull was so funny. It was a great spoof of late night talk shows.

(25,321 posts)The series had several controversial elements, including two primary characters who were prostitutes (one of whom was an illegal immigrant) and one of the first gay couples to be depicted on an American television series. Because of the story lines, the show was the first network television show to have a warning at its opening, cautioning viewers about mature themes. The network supported the show and gave it a full publicity campaign, but it failed to win an audience and was canceled after thirteen episodes; its last telecast was June 6, 1975.[1]

(4,357 posts)Terrible title, worse marketing on the part of FX. Great show, though.
And others have mentioned Deadwood, Arrested Development, and Police Squad.

(18,497 posts)On IFC it was hysterical. Then they took it to mainstream (FOX?) and it was gutted and completely unfunny.

(21,551 posts)Although it "didn't last" because the story ended, and it's still popular in reruns. I think of it as the best TV drama made so far. I'm really surprised it isn't more popular on DU, since the central theme of the show is the class system, but there seem to be few fans of it here.

(692 posts)BBC had this limited run policy that kept it running in short bursts, but they kept bringing UD back to Masterpiece Theatre for at least four years. I was just a kid when it came on, but it ran all through the Edwardian age to the 1920s.

(21,551 posts)And the story came to its logical conclusion, as the house was sold. So at least it didn't get "axed" by some network suit. Comparing it to most of today's television illustrates the gigantic drop in quality of most TV over the past 40 years. There is a new version of Upstairs, Downstairs in production in England, and Jean Marsh is in it and I believe is one of the producers, but as far as I know the new series has no American distribution deal yet. http://www.updown.org.uk/epguide/newshow.htm

(5,744 posts)One of the very few police shows worth watching. Intelligent writing, great dialogue, fantastic main characters, fascinating back story. It had to break up its first season after only 11 episodes due to the screenwriters strike. The second season was the last because NBC decided to cancel it, together with four (!) other shows to make room for Jay Leno's new late night show. Which flopped horribly, just like EVERYBODY PREDICTED beforehand! The one good show in YEARS and they cancel it!

(4,033 posts)it was on either CW or Fox for only 3 episodes when it got yanked. My research found that the an entire years filming had been completed and the entire year had been shown in Great Britain. Waited about 3 years and found it on DVD, watched it, kind of a convoluted ending, but it probably could have gone for another year.
