There was a sit-com on CBS about 1990 or 1991, Mondays, I think. It lasted maybe four weeks and was not very good. After the cancellation was announced they played one final episode which, IMHO was one of the funniest shows ever on TeeVee.

The plot centered about one of the lesser characters who (as a standing joke) couldn't keep a job and always found some way to screw things up. She lands a job as a personal assistant to a professional athlete and suddenly everything clicks. She's totally professional.

Anyway, she comes to work one day and the athlete tells her that she has only two errands to do that day, take the car to get it fixed and wash the dog. Anyway, she gets confused and washes the car and gets the purebred, rare dog fixed. The follow up was priceless!

Can anyone remember that show? THX.

Note: a theremin was used as an effective segue sound that gave it just the right outer-space flavor us kids could understand.

That was on when I was about five or six and there are no words to accurately describe how addicted I was to that program. I even forced my parents to record most of the series on VCR (I've still got a few of them I think, although I can't vouch for the quality). Of course now you can find most of them on YouTube. There was a time when I'd almost memorized every line from every episode -and I am only slightly exaggerating because that's how much I used to watch and rewatch them! Even now, over twenty years later watching them on YouTube, I am amazed how much of it I remember!

Ironically, had I lived in Australia where I do now, I would never have seen this show as it wasn''t shown here. But I lived in SE Asia where my dad was working at the time and, the local television station showed it. I converted quite a few of the kids at school to watching it as well!

I especially loved Paul Winfield as the Mirror. He was hilarious!

that one and Studio 60 On The Sunset strip. It started about the same time as 30Rock and was very similar except it was an hour long show. But it was about a fictional sketch comedy show.

At the time I would have bet anything that 30Rock would get canned and MPerry's show would be the one that was still on.

I guess that's why I don't make a living running a TV station.

Although I should say I do love 30Rock. Tina Fey is just pure, hot genius.

And Studio 60 getting canned cleared up Bradley Whitford to be on Good Guys so something good came of it...

Carnivale was brilliant in so many ways -- casting, directing, cinematography, plot, storytelling, character development, etc. I understand the series creators had planned for a six-season story arc overall, but HBO only picked up the show for two seasons prior to cancelling it. There was so much more to those characters that was waiting to be explored and shared, and it's still disappointing to me (all these years later) that this show will never get a conclusion fitting its brilliance.

Musical.... cops on the beat that broke out into song.

I remember a particularly moving song involving a couple of cops on the beat walking thru a part of town with a lot of homeless ppl.

And another scene in the chief's office (maybe?) and the back wall slid out and three black gals broke into a wonderful motown sort of routine.

Wonderful voices.

And I really liked My World and Welcome to It, mentioned above.

134. It was too complicated for the network suits, too.
Sun Apr 1, 2012, 05:50 AM
Apr 2012

That is, according to their reasoning on why to cancel it: people had to pay attention to it. They couldn't be doing something else, with it on in the background because they had to actively pay attention to what was being said and shown. To the suits, that was too much to ask of your average American TV-watching audience.

I guess they also don't seem to have a problem, then, with the fact that people are not paying attention to the commercials! You'd think they would have noticed that flaw in their statement...

I don't have it memorized like you and Initech, so I think I may have to Netflix it and makes some "copies"

The series had several controversial elements, including two primary characters who were prostitutes (one of whom was an illegal immigrant) and one of the first gay couples to be depicted on an American television series. Because of the story lines, the show was the first network television show to have a warning at its opening, cautioning viewers about mature themes. The network supported the show and gave it a full publicity campaign, but it failed to win an audience and was canceled after thirteen episodes; its last telecast was June 6, 1975.[1]

235. "Didn't last"? It went on for years!

BBC had this limited run policy that kept it running in short bursts, but they kept bringing UD back to Masterpiece Theatre for at least four years. I was just a kid when it came on, but it ran all through the Edwardian age to the 1920s.

And the story came to its logical conclusion, as the house was sold. So at least it didn't get "axed" by some network suit. Comparing it to most of today's television illustrates the gigantic drop in quality of most TV over the past 40 years. There is a new version of Upstairs, Downstairs in production in England, and Jean Marsh is in it and I believe is one of the producers, but as far as I know the new series has no American distribution deal yet. http://www.updown.org.uk/epguide/newshow.htm

One of the very few police shows worth watching. Intelligent writing, great dialogue, fantastic main characters, fascinating back story. It had to break up its first season after only 11 episodes due to the screenwriters strike. The second season was the last because NBC decided to cancel it, together with four (!) other shows to make room for Jay Leno's new late night show. Which flopped horribly, just like EVERYBODY PREDICTED beforehand! The one good show in YEARS and they cancel it!

it was on either CW or Fox for only 3 episodes when it got yanked. My research found that the an entire years filming had been completed and the entire year had been shown in Great Britain. Waited about 3 years and found it on DVD, watched it, kind of a convoluted ending, but it probably could have gone for another year.
