The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI drove by my former employer today...
...and got to thinking about a man who was killed on the job there who was also a fellow driver. You all may recall that there were two men killed there on the job in the space of two weeks.
The driver guy, Greg, and I were having lunch in the break room one day not long after I started working there. He had been working there about 25 years at the time and he told me that when I asked him how long he had worked there. Then he added, "You won't be here that long."
I don't know why he said that, but it turned out to be true. I think I ended up working there a lot longer than he thought I would. I was there a little over five years, but I think Greg had no idea about the circumstances that would light a fire under my butt and get moving along- namely, his and another co-worker's death on the job.
I am so glad I got out of that place, and not just because I ended up being afraid to go to work every day. Good jobs are hard to find in this little town, but I finally found one.
