I went out for a walk tonight
Strolled down our road just as the sun was beginning to go low. Western Pennsylvania countryside is really some of the prettiest scenery in the world and it's a beautiful cool, clear evening. A wash of green is just beginning to hit the trees and the roadside weeds are growing up to obscure the trash. Mostly beer cans, but also juice boxes, burger wrappers, cigarette butts, liquor bottles, and diapers. The favorite beer brand seems to be Miller Lite. I spy a blister pack, the kind the sell pills in, and turn it over with my toe to read "CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE" in large yellow letters. I'm reminded that I live in the opiate overdose capital of the world.

I was giving a friend a ride home one day when she picked up something in the grass next to the parking lot. It looked like a broken ballpoint pen to me, but she told me it was a homemade crack pipe...
