Okay, it seems I didn't pay attention to yet another "death of a musician" posts on FB. As Brother Buzz correctly pointed out, this happened a year ago!
Late-night posting strikes again.
Aristus
(66,388 posts)When he went into the studio to record the track, the engineer remarked on the paucity of lyrics. Sledge said something like: "I'll just wing it on the rest". The rumour is that he recorded it in one take, he ad-libbed most of the song as it now exists, and was crying by the end...
RIP, sir...

(17,656 posts)I'll bet it's true, too.
Life is stranger than fiction.
His signature song was brilliant.
RIP Sledge.

(29,414 posts)I seem to have enough friends on FB with quite varied musical tastes, so I see these posts more there than I do here. The news here is often more focused on the most popular. The lesser-known or obscure ones don't get noticed much at all, other than by a select few DUers who are more in tune, so to speak, with all genres.

(4,959 posts)Muscle Shoals Clip - Percy Sledge
Published on Oct 3, 2013
http://muscleshoals.co.uk/
Located alongside the Tennessee River, Muscle Shoals, Alabama is the unlikely breeding ground for some of America's most creative and defiant music. Under the spiritual influence of the "Singing River" as Native Americans called it, the music of Muscle Shoals has helped create some of the most important and resonant songs of all time. At its heart is Rick Hall who founded FAME Studios. Overcoming crushing poverty and staggering tragedies, he brought black and white together in Alabama's cauldron of racial hostility to create music for the generations. He is responsible for creating the "Muscle Shoals sound" and The Swampers, the house band at FAME that eventually left to start their own successful studio, known as Muscle Shoals Sound. Greg Allman, Clarence Carter, Mick Jagger, Etta James, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge and others bear witness to Muscle Shoals' magnetism, mystery and why it remains influential today.

What a crappy year, and I thought last year was bad.

Well, I can always self-delete. Thanks for noticing

(36,444 posts)Percy's passing was a big deal in my family; my cousin sang back-up on 'When A Man Loves a Woman' when she was fifteen years old, and they became a lifelong friends.
