I have been trying to get back into journalism for the past eight years since I was laid off. Working as an in-house PR person for a college pays the bills. But, even though I am good at it, it's kind of boring.
Today I got a "bite" on one of the resumes I have send out. And it sounds like a good gig.
But.
It's in North Carolina.
I don't even know if I should proceed with the phone interview.

Someone is going to get that job. Your "not" taking it isn't going to affect the NC economy.
You aren't Bruce Springsteen, whose absence WOULD make a difference. Pretty much anyone with a journalistic background can substitute for the gig you seek. No one can substitute for BS.
Who says you can't cover the bathroom story from your NC perch?
Running away is just one way to fight.

(135,425 posts)what goes on there?
Now, if you were applying for work as head chef and toe massager to the governor, I'd have a different POV...but you're applying for work w/the 4th Estate.

(6,837 posts)... is a managing editor position for a smallish publication. So, my job would be to torment the reporters.

(28,394 posts)My son spent a few years in NC and really liked living there (he wasn't too far from the beach). The wing nuts won't be in charge forever!
I just remember a saying..... Take every opportunity because some days there are none.

(31,404 posts)Yes, HB 2 is an f'in disaster. Yes, the state is currently controlled by a bunch of right wing, ignorant, evangelical
bigots. BUT, there's an excellent chance that the governor's office will be occupied by Roy Cooper after
the November election. McCrory is not popular--and he's really screwed himself with HB 2. It will probably take
longer to regain control of the Legislature because the Republicans gerrymandered the hell out of districts. That
is being fought in the courts.
If the little publication is in the western part of the state, there are some pretty liberal counties there. If it's in the Research Triangle area,
it's a liberal part of the state. Charlotte is becoming more liberal. Toward the Outer Banks and Down East there are a lot of
Republicans, but some of them are actually at least environmentally conscious.
I wouldn't write off NC without at least taking a look at the area covered by the publication. Some parts of the state
are really nice and cost of living can be quite reasonable.
We moved here in 2000. I've lived in NY, NJ, CA, MO, and NE. I loved Chapel Hill--up until the Republicans
took over in 2012. I don't think they are done damaging the state, but I think they will no longer control
the state government within the not too distant future.

(206,016 posts)My grandmother retired there, Western NC, Black Mountain which is near Asheville. I visited her often and liked it so much that I even considered relocating. It's beautiful country there and the people I met were awfully nice, too. My grandmother's friends were definitely liberals, though they were mostly transplants, like her, but she had local friends, too.
You might consider posting in the NC forum if you want advice about a certain location. Obviously, if these folks are on DU, they're kindred spirits, as well.
