Baseball lore, trivia, experience and history

What's you favorite story, movie, trivia or bit of lore?

Mine: the longest professional baseball game
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longest_professional_baseball_game

It lasted for 33 innings, with eight hours and 25 minutes of playing time. 32 innings were played April 18/19, 1981 at McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and the final 33rd inning was played June 23, 1981. Pawtucket won the game, 3–2.

A few records set during the game:
Most at-bats for one team in one game: 114 (PAW)
Most total at-bats in one game: 219
Most total strikeouts in one game: 60
Most innings: 33
Most at-bats by one player in one game: 14, Dave Koza, Lee Graham, Chico Walker (all PAW)
Most plate appearances by one player in one game: 15, Tom Eaton, Cal Ripken, Jr., Dallas Williams (all ROC)
Total time for one game: 8 hours, 25 minutes
Longest plate appearance by a single umpire: Dennis Cregg (882 pitches over 8 hours and 25 minutes)

Just for fun:
Dennis Cregg had brought his nephew David to the game; David's father became concerned for his family and called the police, who told him that the game had not ended....Dennis Cregg thinks that David Cregg has never attended another baseball game.
Wade Boggs' father complimented him for getting four hits in the game, the player admitted that he had 12 at bats.

I've always been impressed by that, too. He must have been very careful with the bases loaded, to never accidentally hang one and have it hit out on him.

... and that was with a 154 game season. (Two of them would be kicked out of baseball in the Black Sox scandal) They came in second, so at least they didn't have the embarrassment of going on to lose the World Series.

... so it is only remembered by the fanatics.

The 1908 season was some kind of wonderful, too (Merkle's boner being only part of the drama). One of my favorite sports books, Crazy '08 by Cait Murphy, is about that season. Interesting hearsay in it about the Giants trying to bribe the ump for the replay of the Merkle game, including one C. Mathewson.

...against Brown...probably the wildest pennant race ever--and the AL race may have been even better. Toss in Honus Wagner's greatest season--Bill James has argued that that was the best year anyone ever had, even better than Ruth--and you've got a little drama there. I hate the fact that the Wild Card has basically destroyed real pennant races...

17 May 1979. As so often happened, the Phils built up a huge lead early and then pissed it all away, the only difference here being how large the lead was, and the fact that they managed to win it in the end. Started in the first inning and never let up.

both off of Chan Ho Park. That also set the record of 8 RBIs in one inning.

Unfortunately, that was the height of the steroid age, so it's tainted. I don't know if Tatis used, or not.
