Nobody was so much like everyone than this guy.
2: Monk. I loved Mr Monk. Loved him. took the Columbo character and expounded beautifully on it.
3: Sam Malone. "Playing hard to get for me is having to wait through dinner". Was living that life then too, so Sam was a role model, and a cautionary tale all at the same time.
4: Ted Baxter. The best ever idiot on TV. And there's a lot of them out there....
5: Barney Fife. Dude still cracks me up.
6: Rose Nyland. Loved her naivete and her Saint Olaf stories.
7. Larry David. "Don't say it Larry" and then he does.
8: Marie Barone: the perfect meddlesome mother in law from hell.
9: Josh Lyman: the West Wing. I loved Josh, he kept the show together....
10: Jim Ignatowski (Taxi).. "Slow down"! Loved Jim another great idiot.

... and many-faceted, as we got to see as series developed.

But I was always interested to see Goldblume's reaction to things - measured and thoughtful, as though he were always weighing the intellectual side as well as the emotional side of people caught up in events.

With shows like Hill Street, NYPD Blue and Third Watch, it's hard to choose a "favourite" - so many great characters so well portrayed by the actors who brought them to life.

Yeah, the first season was pretty bleak, relating how the broken people who worked in the bus station got through their lives. But a number of episodes ended with redemptive, uplifting conclusions. The second season, Larroquette's character got a hot girlfriend, and a nicer apartment, and interest in the show dropped off fast.
