The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI had a job interview today.
It's a local unionized company. The starting pay is $3 an hour more than I make now. The insurance is better than what I currently have at about the same price. The best thing? I can see a future at this company and my bachelor's degree may help me work into better positions. At my current employer, they don't even care that I have a degree. Just drive the truck, dummy, and turn off your brain.
Things have really slowed down at work. I was getting 55 hours a week on average there for a long time, and I needed that overtime to help me get by. Then they hired another driver when they really didn't need one and I started losing hours. Maybe it makes more sense to them to try to avoid paying overtime, but it's going to result in them losing a good driver- if I must say so myself...and around there nobody else is going say it.
Another good thing about the potential new job is that I'd no longer be out on the road all day. The new job is loading trucks, switching trailers, and ensuring the trailers out in the yard that are loaded with product are at the correct temperature. It's a food processing company and all of their trailers are temperature controlled. I'd be working in a cooler most of the day. It's 43 degrees in there so I won't be sweating my ass off anymore in the summer. I know that prolonged exposure to that temperature can make you mighty cold, but I'm pretty sure I can handle it if I dress right for it and I'll be moving around a lot so that will help me keep warm.
They want to do a background check on me and they are going to get back with me on Monday. I really hope I get this job.

(53,410 posts)I can see you coming in out of the cold in just a very few months.
They'll be very lucky to have you.
The manager said that I would have to do the job for a year, then I can bid on other jobs and get something else if I want.

(4,412 posts)The last two interviews I had they asked me "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?"
I wanted to say I have no idea.

(10,418 posts)The toughest question I had involved a job that I had only worked at for a few months 5 years ago. They wanted to know why I was only there for a short time. I had a good answer for them, though. I told them the truth.
I didn't get the question you were asked. I also didn't get the, "What do you consider your greatest weakness?" question. I had an answer prepared for that question, though. I'd like to say, "My wife's lasagna," but if I were asked that question, I'd say something along the lines of being a workaholic. That's what my wife tells me. I haven't taken a vacation in 5 years and I never call off work. I work all the overtime I can get my hands on. Even when I have a doctor's appointment, I'll still put in as many hours as I can. I have a cold right now that would have most people staying home, but I went in and punched the clock like usual this week.

(10,418 posts)Yeah, I've got the cold weather deal down pat. I work outside for a few hours a day for my current job no matter what the weather is like. Forty-three degrees won't be so bad considering I can be out in single digit temperatures in the winter for my current job.

(10,418 posts)I saw a guy coming in out of the cooler and noted how he was dressed. He had a jacket on and some gloves and he didn't appear to be shivering.

(10,418 posts)I put in a couple of applications the day after that man was killed where I work. I had needed to be doing that anyway, but it lit a fire under my butt and got me moving.

(2,484 posts)As someone who is on the other side of the table these days, I can attest to the fact that interviews generally suck for all participants.
Tobin S.
(10,418 posts)But this one went well. I had help putting together a very good resume and they based most of their questions from that. I felt at ease and comfortable. I kept things positive as much as possible. I told the truth. I did not misrepresent myself. They seemed happy with the interview at the end.
I'm hoping I'll have an offer on Monday. We'll see, and I'll report back here to let you guys know what happens.
