Kovac passed down his familys beer making tradition by working tirelessly with his son to craft the first version of Not Your Fathers Root Beer. At 10% ABV, the silky, smooth and satisfying finish is unmatched in flavor. It appeals to craft beer aficionados as well as those who dont typically drink beer but crave something unique.

(60,010 posts)Original root beer recipes, they quite interesting, and made with real sugar, which gives them a lot of depth.

(60,010 posts)soda, not alcohol, but perhaps way back then they made an alcohol variety.
Anyhow, many recipes in this country for birch beer, and for red birch beer, made out of plants, mostly, including "roots".
Several of the smaller craft soda places make it, like Jones, and Hylands. It is quite good.
We pick up different real sodas from time to time, just for the heck of it.

(20,209 posts)IE, is it sweet? I don't normally drink beer because it just tastes too bitter for me.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Root beer is a dark sweet beverage traditionally made using the root beer tree Sassafras albidum (sassafras) or the vine Smilax ornata (sarsaparilla) as the primary flavor. Root beer may be alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and may be carbonated or non-carbonated. Most root beer has a thick foamy head when poured. Modern, commercially produced root beer is generally sweet, foamy, carbonated, and non-alcoholic, and is flavoured using artificial sassafras. It may or may not contain caffeine.

(36,827 posts)My dad and I used to make homemade root beer and I've made it with my kids before. The traditional alcoholic root beer, which is what we made, has an extremely low alcohol content. The reason it contains alcohol at all is because yeast is used to produce the carbonation and alcohol is a byproduct. So the alcohol content is somewhere around near beer if not less.
I've tried this one along with Coney Island Hard Root Beer. They both taste about the same, but I think Coney Island is a little better.

(36,827 posts)It's very easy to make at home and there's lots of ways to do it. If you use yeast for carbonation it leaves a detectable spent yeast taste which I rather like, but some people don't.

(36,827 posts)Not My Father's rated a little higher, although between the two I prefer the former. Neither of them would I keep in my fridge as I'm just not that big on sweet alcoholic drinks.

(16,399 posts)I like hard iced tea and lemonade. And I do want to try the hard ginger ale and orange, but am now afraid it will taste like this.

A glass of Not Your Father's root beer and a scoop of dead baby.

(19,089 posts)Not the Float, but the Root Beer ... it was wonderful ... MUCH smoother than beer, but, if you dont like Root Beer, then that won't matter ...
