I have a cat who has a real sweet tooth for chocolate, that I won't let her indulge.
Can cats get sick from chocolate like dogs can?

(46,333 posts)So sorry Charlotte, no matter how many dirty looks you give me, you can't have any of the chocolate I like.

(12,272 posts)I agree, chocolate isn't good for cats, but white chocolate doesn't have any chocolate in it. Maybe the kitteh would enjoy the cocoa butter/sugar and vanilla combination

(12,704 posts)however, I found this info which says that altho white chocolate isn't deadly it can cause upset stomachs in cats. I think it's the best policy not to give kitties human food since common stuff like onion and mushrooms are dangerous to cats.
No, cats can't have chocolate. I would suggest not to give them any just to be on the safe side.
Chocolate can contain high amounts of fat and caffeine-like stimulants known as methylxanthines. If ingested in significant amounts, chocolate can potentially produce clinical effects in cats ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death in severe cases.
However white chocolate has a significantly lower amount of methylxanthines, which makes it less dangerous. So, if your cat ate some white chocolate, I wouldn't be worried as long as it wasn't a very large amount, but I would check with a vet to be sure. Small amounts may only cause an upset stomach.

(12,272 posts)And the family dog would kill for one of those cookies. You couldn't sit and enjoy one without him getting in your face and begging. He would stand up and try to grab it out of your hand. He maybe had a couple of cookies a week for all of his long healthy life. He was a big dog and I guess just a few chocolate chips didn't bother him. Thanks for looking it up, I just want Archae's kitteh to be happy
