To me that would be Chris Cooper.
The first time I say him was in a dark movie about the mine union wars in the early part of the 20th century. Matewan.
Then he was in Lonesome Dove and I was on my way to liking this unassuming and always low keyed actor. I have seen about hallf of his 60 movies knowing when going in it would be a good project.
He was in the Bourne movies as well.
So, who is your fav...

I also have no idea why Ian Holm hasn't won an Oscar, though he has been nominated -- once.
Same goes for Judy Davis.

He is best known to American television audiences for his Golden Globe and Emmy nominated role as Luke O'Neil in The Thorn Birds (1983), starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward, whom he later married.
He starred in several international productions including Tai-Pan with Joan Chen, Gorillas in the Mist with Sigourney Weaver, and Cocktail with Tom Cruise."

(30,885 posts)**********POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T SEEN "BLUE IN THE FACE"**********
The movie was a "sort of" sequel to the movie "Smoke" (although I like B.I.T.F. much better). It's supposedly made up of improv pieces filmed during the production of "Smoke."
Setting is a Brooklyn cigar store. Vinny, the owner, wants to sell. Harvey Keitel, who runs the store, tries to talk him out of it.
One day, the owner is visited by...for lack of a better term...the "ghost" of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. Jackie is played by Keith David, and you only see him from behind, but it is a wonderful, powerful performance. Through the "visitation," and without giving any "advice," Jackie lets Vinnie feel "the spirit of Brooklyn." Vinnie didn't realize how deep those waters flowed. All of a sudden, selling the store isn't such an easy decision.
And if that's not enough, he had the co-starring lead role in the LEGENDARY "They Live."

(59,305 posts)I usually see him usually as an intense bad guy, or intense kick ass type in his roles, but I saw his role in the new Muppet Movie and he just cracked me the hell up, never in a million years did I expect to see such a goofy/yet funny performance from an actor that usually brings intensity to his roles.

(16,986 posts)All three movies are by John Sayles, who deserves his own thread.
In the first Cooper is a labor organizer; in the second, a sheriff who forever faces comparison with his deceased father; in the third, a handpicked gubernatorial candidate who happens to be the not particularly bright scion of a powerful family.
Bring popcorn.

(16,986 posts)And a Sayles movie is always worth the time -- Matewan, The Brother from Another Planet, Return of the Secaucus Seven, Limbo, Eight Men Out, Silver City, Lone Star, and more.
And he works with terrific actors, Strathairn and Cooper among them, but also Mary McDonnell.

(382 posts)He's doing OK, and never seems to have the Oscar-worthy role, but I enjoy his performances so much.
John Hurt comes to mind also, but he's been Oscar-nominated twice, so maybe he doesn't really qualify as not receiving his due.

And from the movie "Big Trouble in Little China" with Kurt Russell, I'd add James Hong. If anyone deserves an Oscar, it's him. He'll probably only get it posthumously, unfortunately.
