I lost my wonderful 14-year-old Husky/Chow mix to cancer last fall and 5 months of coming home to a quiet house is long enough. I live in the Upper Midwest and would love to have another friend built for our wintry climate.

(31,402 posts)I used it to find my Snowy. She was in a high kill shelter in Georgia, pulled out by a rescue group from South Carolina, and came to live
with me in North Carolina when I adopted her six years ago.

Good luck with finding your next furry friend!

(205,975 posts)My Sara also came from a high kill shelter in Ohio. She was found on the streets as a stray and was such a nice dog that they were persuaded at the last minute to include her in an "underground railroad" of dogs being transported to New York and Vermont where there are tougher animal protection laws. I was so fortunate that she found me and she was such a sweetheart that I've often wondered if someone was missing her... But she found a forever home with me.

(21 posts)Good for you! Best wishes for you and your next friend, however you get together.
There are many ways to find a dog, and I'm so happy for you.
Those Alaskan Huskies (mostly native village husky crosses) and some Sibes, have been having a blast (most are still on the trail), at my favorite race: the Yukon Quest International

(20,582 posts)Here are a few pictures. He's a clown, but as they said at the shelter - a Houdini escape artist. The good thing is I live in a small town and now everyone knows and loves him. He's the most gentle dog I've ever seen - especially with small children - and so protective, just coming three years old. It's funny .... a couple of my elderly neighbours stop in to see if he wants to go for their walks at night - there are a few vicious dogs that sometimes get loose (like him) and he keeps them from getting close.
A Great-Pyrenees cross (German Shepherd? - they weren't sure), I guess that's where his instinct to protect comes from. Not sure if he can even fight or not but he's huge, and just his growl seems to back them off. Anyway ... I go on and on about him - he's a treasure and I'm very lucky to be in his life.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your dog and friend, it's unbelievably hard.

(20,582 posts)I watched the Humane Society's web page for months looking at all the adorable faces and not knowing if it was long enough yet since my 'Wolfie' passed away, so horrible losing him - then I saw Obie, and that was it. The night before the morning I was to go up and get him I had a nightmare there was a line-up waiting for the doors to open - all there for Obie, and I had to fight with people to get in. Weird. He was so matted and thin - I brushed enough hair out of him to keep two medium sized dogs warm for the winter. He's a big, goofy sweetie.

(38,506 posts)Not all the time though.
He digs.
And digs.
He's dug half a dozen holes - well, very deep and shaped about right for graves, actually - in the back yard. I like to think he's doing it for himself as a cool place to lie in but he never goes near them afterwards ... and he just sort of watches me as I stand looking at them. Sometimes I wonder.
