for 30+ years, v-day was a special anniversary for hubs and me. we met on feb 6, and admitted we were in love on v-day.
it all became a burden as the years went by. on a few of those v-days, we were deeply in crisis, and trying to make the best of it. those days are seared in my brain.
i am a free woman now. i wouldnt complain about having someone who wanted to take my out tonight and lie to me. but i am just as happy to say fuck this day and all the stupid expectations that it brings.

(25,816 posts)It's too late for me to ignore Valentines Day--I already bought the flowers.
I gave them to Jeannie at her office Thursday morning. That way her male co-workers
are shamed and her female co-workers are jealous.

(115,732 posts)Last Valentine I ever got, which was years ago, came from a guy who abruptly dumped me a short time later. Turned out he'd been carrying on for some time with a co-worker. Also fuck Valentine's Day for the Valentine exchange in grade school, where the kids are supposed to give everybody one, but they don't, so all the kids are counting them up and if you didn't get very many you felt like shit. Then you grow up and your "Valentine" dumps you. So, again, fuck Valentine's Day.

I hate Valentine's Day, and I don't hate lightly.

(16,383 posts)I'm sure with ya. Honestly though, if and when I ever have another SO, my Valentine's Day gift to him will be that he doesn't have to worry about coming up with a Valentine's gift for me. I'd much rather spontaneous acts of affection throughout the year than an expected and practically mandated trinket on 2/14.

(12,132 posts)but we found a nifty little local steak house and splurged on a couple filets mignon and some reeeeeeally good craft beer (tried a sampler flight and my favorite was the Cigar City Cafe con Leche stout).
This place is in a tiny little city near Orlando, in a shopping center sandwiched between a Beef O'Brady's (a chain that is as stupid as it sounds) and an abandoned Winn-Dixie. Hardly any signage - you'd miss it if you didn't know the unassuming awning that read "steak house" wasn't just a part of the Beef O'Brady's patio dining area.
We went on Friday because we knew we wanted to try this place but they were booked solid for Saturday and Sunday.
We had fried green tomato appetizer that was just straight up delicious. A stack of 3 thick slabs of fried green tomatoes with a creamy goat-cheese layer between them and some kind of zesty aioli drizzled across.
We split a wedge salad that was as good as anywhere - even better than some really - I think they make the bleu cheese and balsamic glaze in house.
The steaks (Aged Black Angus) were absolutely perfect - I cut into mine with my knife and immediately discovered I didn't need my knife. Used only my fork the rest of the way. Each steak came with 2 sides (Which was awesome as most places like this make you buy sides ala cart). I got creamed spinach (the best I ever had - sometimes I get spinach that is bitter and off-putting but this was smooth and sweet and delicious) and risotto - Another perfectly seasoned and cooked dish. Chef Ramsey would be praising whoever made that. No donkeys in this kitchen.
Mrs. Geek had the same but got baked potato instead of risotto. After her first bite she just looked up with a WTF? expression and I asked her if something was wrong - she said "No - I just can't believe even the damn sour cream is the best I ever had". We forgot to ask if they did something or made their own or what but she kept talking about it long after we had left so it must have been really good.
Stellar service. Made us feel special. Wait-staff was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The owner walked up and down making sure everyone had full glasses and new bread and olive oil. If I hadn't been in public with my wife, I would have licked my dinner plate.
We shared a wedge of Key Lime pie for dessert. Exactly the right ratio of tart to sweet.
We've found our new favorite special occasion steak house. And maybe, if we can control ourselves, regular occasion on occasion. It weren't cheap - and I didn't even get into their scotch selection this time. I know some of you high-rollers might chuckle but $150.00 for 2 people is more than I generally spend for a dinner.
But it was a special occasion and worth it.

(10,893 posts)living overseas and me not even having close to enough money to visit her, there's not much to V-Day for me except V-Day candy and being green with envy when I see other guys out with their ladies. It's pretty much a ho-hum holiday from my perspective. I don't have to buy anyone anything, but it's also dull.

I usually don't like or dislike a holiday. It's just kind of another day and if you look at it in a positive way it can be fun.

(1,423 posts)I've got a new granddaughter in the house and there has been a lot of stuff going on so I was ready to declare: **** Valentines day too but when I came home...
my wife was acting like she wanted to do something. She had even bought herself a gift, a necklace. She looked really nice with that necklace on. We decided to go for a drive, as the house is full of people.
We drove up the river, up spiral highway and back down. We went by her childhood home and I went by mine. We found a nice place to eat for a change in our travels. It was really nice but we both laughed and had to remind each other that if we were to begin enjoying life too much, we might somehow, slowly lose it. After 30 years,
Together we won those battles of our youth
Rivals we have never been, accept this blessed truth
Welcome home dear old friend

(70,120 posts)i actually gave up on the feb 15 chocolate splurge that i used to do when i was single before this marriage. they start pushing that stuff so early that it is usually nearly inedibly stale by the 15th.
good that you found some nice roses. they too are not as nice as back in the day. some are held for so long before the holiday that they are dropping pedals by the 15th.

(12,296 posts).... and candy was already 'marked for quick sale', with the Easter candy being filled in on the other end of the aisle. Prices were still higher than I was willing to pay, though.
I buy myself candy anytime, as the urge strikes; flowers - not so often ... so they were more of a treat for the "holiday".
