Malasadas are a Hawai'i thing. Believe it or not, the islands offer two types of donut holes with distinct histories! Malasadas are Portuguese, and like Krispy Kremes, are best enjoyed hot, while a tray of Okinawan andagi can survive a trip all the way around the island to the North Shore. Barack's alma mater Punahou holds an annual carnival on its college-like campus; two of the highlights are malasadas and Portuguese bean soup (also available at Zippy's, sort of a fusion Denny's ).
