My niece is dating a man who wants to get more serious, and she wants to check him out, particularly to find the date of his divorce. I realize that details of the divorce are probably not public record. But isn't the date of it public record? How to find it?

(115,735 posts)Try googling the court system information for the state where the divorce was filed. For example, in my state, Minnesota, this kind of information is readily available here: http://pa.courts.state.mn.us/Search.aspx?ID=200

(50,130 posts)I see a lot of those for-pay background checks, but I am pretty suspicious of those and would sure not like to enter my credit card info in one of those sites.

(50,130 posts)I'll take a look at it. Also, I'm wondering if it is possible to just get that info at a county courthouse.

(115,735 posts)those records should be available at no charge. Good luck, hope your niece isn't getting hooked up with a dodgy character.

(50,130 posts)I suppose I should pay for one of those background checks that are so commonly used by dating women today, but I have no idea which one is good.

(16,383 posts)I signed up for a "one-month" subscription. Three months later I learned they were still charging me a monthly fee. I called the service and they did refund the money, but you have to stay on top of your credit card statements. Be careful.

(50,130 posts)They will bill you until you tell them to stop, apparently. Sort of like ancestry.com.

On edit: Now that I think about it, I don't think it mentioned divorces!

(24,146 posts)probate, bankruptcy, civil and most criminal files are open record in colorado and that's where i'd go to get them.

Thanks.

(24,146 posts)things aren't too bad here. i'm still adjusting to my new position at work and the alarm going off so early, but it's not too bad.

(50,130 posts)...we just haven't gotten around to it yet. She is bored, even with the best picture window in the world for a cat, looking out at an active bird scene on the riverbank. She loves to play, but we haven't found any excellent toys yet. She shrugs off the laser pointer, and is meh to catnip toys.
