Okay I know I should not judge. I don't know their circumstances but I just can't let go.
I'm talking about those who abuse disabled parking privileges.
There is a surfer where I live who parks for free in a state park. He then hikes down to the beach and surfs. He hangs a disabled banner on his rear view mirror.
Another guy I see frequently at a local lake backs his boat down the ramp, launches, and parks his truck in handicapped parking to avoid a little walking.
I get offended by this. Yeah it's a pet peeve but c'mon.

(14,691 posts)They should be ashamed of themselves. Isn't it against the law to park in a disabled parking spot?

(14,691 posts)have one of those "invisible" disabilities? I'm not being sarcastic. See:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_disability

He parks in a very expensive and coveted state parking lot for free.

(20,202 posts)disabled, but now he isn't. Of course, an honorable person would not continue to use the tag if they weren't still disabled.

(23,691 posts)No objection to them using the tags when they are with the disabled person, but it is disingenuous, selfish and wrong to use them for their own benefit when the disabled person is not with them.

(4,033 posts)I own the car & it is my disabilities that allowed me to get the plate. I know that too often people borrow a placard from a relative or friend to use. I once asked our Police Chief if they could find out who a placard was issued to, he said that the state did not have a data base for that, only for plates.
I get awkward looks from people sometimes when I get out of my car, as I do not use any aid(s). If someone were to ask or confront me about my disabilities, my answer would be "what scar do you want to see first."
It's a pet peeve for us "disabled'" too.
People who cheat ruin it for honest people like you.

(26,330 posts)California has some huge fines. $900 plus.
It seems like there are more spots these days. When my mom was still alive, we used to have a hard time in some places with not enough spots. It was hard to drop her off and have her wait.

"REMOVE BEFORE DRIVING"
I have one. It's NOT a badge of 'specialness'.
It goes in the glove compartment between stops.
Every time I see someone driving with this hazard to their field of vision and safe driving I think "IDIOT!"

(24,303 posts)Her disabilities are not readily visible or apparent. She has Asthma and Arthritis. Some days she feels better than others. Medication can make a difference in her mobility ability. When she feels good, she sometimes will still use a handicap space. The reason is even though she feels good when she parks, she may be in a great deal of pain by the time she has walked around the grocery store or the mall. It can't really always be predicted.
Certainly there are doctors and patients who abuse this system. But don't judge someone strictly by the appearance of how they look when they get out of their car. Not even a doctor can make a proper diagnosis on this alone.

(77 posts)called Spondylolisthesis. I still work and do stuff, but sometimes it is really painful. I look pretty fit, but sometimes am in agony just standing or walking. Maybe the ocean is good for his pain? Or he could be a jerk? I sometimes test myself on long walks. Sometimes I am limping home. At least I can ride a bike without too much pain. In fact, It would be nice to have a tag for my bike so it can be used as an aide for my walking problem. It would be nice in a large park where bikes are not allowed.
