The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsYou're traveling at 80 miles per hour.
You're on a clear highway, your cruise control is set at 80 MPH.
There is no traffic.
You are cruising at 80.
How long will it take you to go 80 miles?
This is not a trick question.
It's very straightforward.
You would be absolutely amazed at how many people DO NOT get the concept of 'miles per hour'.

(2,101 posts)Long, long ago when I would do time/distance or mixture problems in my head and without hesitation I may have quickly guessed at an answer. Now it would take me an hour - and I would have to back track the 80 miles in hopes of remembering to set the odometer first to see how far it was. Damn, now I've forgotten the question.

(My sons are in the middle of taking the required standardized testing for our state, which they detest.)
Older Son: What sort of questions did they have on your test?
Younger Son: The usual. You know If you throw a triangle out the window of a train going 50 miles an hour and there is air friction, how many cupcakes can Pedro buy with one human soul?

(958 posts)A 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder up on blocks will take 80 NIMUTES to travel 80 reverse miles. That is as long as it stays on the blocks.

(958 posts)It is a general rule of thumb in answering a multiple choice question to always pick the answer with the odd component that sets it off from the other answers. All the choices used units of minutes except for the first one which used nimutes. By default, it is the correct answer.

(23,364 posts)First of all, if you drive 80mph in England, you will drive into the ocean before the hour's up. Plus, traffic cameras will cause your family to receive speeding tickets after you're drowned.
Second, they don't have miles in England, only kilometers. So you need to divide by five and multiply by eight, or is the other way 'round.

(20,234 posts)the transmission freaked out and the forward gears stopping working, but I was able to put it in reverse and cruise around like that til I got to a service station.
I see you wrote this is all straight forward, but what if our car can't handle that?
