The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy ignore feature is going into overtime. How is yours doing?
I've begun to notice a rather unpleasantness in DU recently, with a lot of clique-ish, clannish attitudes and quick to ridicule.
I don't normally engage that. I put on ignore and move on. How do you all deal with rude people on a message board?
Skittles
(153,182 posts)if I would not put up with their sorry ass in real life, no reason to have to put up with them here either

(31,401 posts)But I also pretty much stay out of the individual candidate groups as well as GD P.
Most of the nasty stuff I've read has been from being called to a jury and reading through the thread.
Just reinforces my decision to spend more time elsewhere.

(5,604 posts)You don't say!
There is no-one on my ignore list, because I expect Du to be unpleasant, and good and bad, and cheap and awesome, and all things in between 24/7/365.

I do miss the feature that told us how many people had us on ignore though. It didn't give names, just a number.

(12,598 posts)keyword ignore is useful for weeding out subjects that I simply am not interested in.
The DU experience can be great - if you make it that way.

(8,217 posts)I just tend to try not to take anything personal and carry on.
Find something I could agree on and build from that, if at all possible.

(47,564 posts)It was a thing back on DU2. Someone would post somewhere "We got a live one", and then me and other like-minded dicks would go and fuck with 'em until they got smushed. DU3's just not as much fun. Now I just throw 'em on Ignore as soon as I see 'em and I figure, with the way MIRT has gotten so efficient at taking out the trash, they're probably gone before too long. The rest of my list are just the kind of people I don't like, so I turn 'em off and never look back.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)I'm the same way. I know some of them will accuse people of logging off in order to still see their posts and then comment about those hidden posts, but to me, that's defeating the purpose of having them on ignore. I don't care if they ever reply to me. I'll never know, and I like it that way

(19,846 posts)I have less than a dozen and most of them are there for being consistently inarticulate. I have one who goes off and on-- I like his posts but he just swamps the forums with OPs some days and I have to hide him so it's easier to read stuff from everyone else.

(5,364 posts)Then I'd miss the barrage of excellent rebuttals others make against who I would put on ignore. I put someone on ignore once and an interesting thread I followed went from a hundred posts to maybe 15. I un-ignored them and enjoyed the show and got to see a jerk a jerk be rightfully pilloried.

(37,748 posts)My ignore list has remains consist at 21 since I began using it several months ago; as racists and MRA's add nothing of substance to any conversation any more than a half-witted grade-school child adds to a discussion of graduate level Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. Indeed, their tantrums tend to subtract from any valid discussion.

(41,209 posts)I use it only when someone deliberately sets out to taunt and bait me, or comes to a group to which I belong for no reason than to bait and taunt. That's why I have only had either 2 or 3 people on ignore in 11 years on DU, and only one currently.

(46,179 posts)have anyone on ignore. During primary season, I've got eight.
What's really in overload? The trash can has 10 different words/phrases to trash before I see the threads. And...I manually trash/hide several threads every single time I check in.
My trash can serves a useful purpose; it filters OPs so I see more of what I'm interested in on the front page of any forum. That, along with the manual hides, also help control the temptation to kick threads I don't want to see kicked.
I'll clear everything and start fresh after the Democratic convention next summer.

(1,965 posts)An individual unwilling or incapable of acknowledging or using reason or rationale, leading to a 2 day long one sided debate, which eventually forced me to conclude this persons opinions on any topic, are at the least, suspect.
In all my time using the internet chat rooms and message boards involving all manner of topics, going back to the very earliest days of Windows 98, and having encountered virtually every stripe of troll, idiot or dingbat, I'd never before bumped up against this persons type of obstinate, willful ignorance. My first ignore, anywhere, ever.

(2,188 posts)There was a Patriots fan here when Tom Brady initially got suspended four games (later over-turned). He publicly stated "ignore" to anyone who said anything bad in that thread about Brady or his Patriots. That was just nuts.
kentauros
(29,414 posts)though I have no evidence they ever followed through with the threat. I never tell people when I put them on ignore. I just observe their behavior, whether with me, or other members. Not everyone will agree with why I have some of them on my ignore list, as not all are necessarily rude assholes. It's just that a few are always negative on certain topics, and thrive in mocking people. I find the latter excessive in being mean simply for their own pleasure.
Anyway, sorry I miss-read your post. Won't happen again (maybe)
MrMickeysMom
(20,453 posts)... wouldn't that mean you have excessive use of the "control freak" feature?
I just try to get along with everyone. If I think so-and-so is being nasty and unreasonable one issue, I'm sure we can agree and laugh on next next one tomorrow.

(9,894 posts)almost from the beginning and never used ignore until there was a person who posted many, many threads at a time and I got sick of wading through them. Then came the Snowden affair and the list just multiplied. I have about 10 people. Most are from Snowden and I've added 1 or 2 who race and/or gender bait constantly. I reserve it for people who just can't stop banging the drum over and over and over again.
