Let's talk about your holiday shopping, shall we?

most everybody gets a holiday basket. As I do every year, I check what I bought last year and try to remember if it was well received and do it again. My son, dtr in law and 3 year old grandson in a tight Manhattan apt. get a smallish basket with a variety of goodies. My CA kid, husband and grandkid get another kind...obviously they aren't deprived of citrus at all and they have lots more space. But there is something for everyone...no junk, tho...

I didn't need the money, I just needed an excuse to leave the house and I wanted the employee discount because I basically read a book a day and that kind of addiction gets expensive fast.

.....but I spend a *lot* of time at my local B & N...yeah, I love the small bookstores, etc, etc...but browsing is what it's all about to me, and the Big Ones just have more books to browse, especially the relatively obscure ones, than the small ones do. God forbid that bookstores disappear... ...it's the physical act of browsing that I love. I *hate* buying online...

And I did it all without going to the mall. I ordered almost everything online this year. Is this a great country or what!

11. I give books to the kids and mostly gift certificates to adults
Sat Dec 12, 2015, 05:46 PM
Dec 2015

My family eliminated gift giving once the kids became adults. My husband's family draws names for the adults so all we have to get are presents for our grandnephews and two adult gifts. My husband's sister graduated from Clemson so he's giving her a Clemson shirt in honor of some football thing they won this year. For the nephew who is starting college, I'm just giving him fifty dollar bill - I have no idea what he might want or need so I figure money is always welcome at that age.

So my shopping is done and I never got near a mall.

When our nieces and nephews turned 12 I started giving them money instead of books.

The oldest great nephews I have contact with are five so I have a few years left before that will start for them. What's cool is that their parents love for us to give them books. The boys (twins) are reading at third grade level and they are teaching their three year old brother to read, so it's a challenge picking books that they will like. I generally try to stay a year or two ahead of their current reading level and that has worked so far.

Their grandparents keep the boys well supplied with toys so I don't want to contribute to that overflow.
