Who in the fuck says po-tah-to?!1

No one. And I mean no one, ever, in real life refers to a potato as a po-tah-to, unless being absurdly contrarian. This has been bothering me all day since my drive into work listening to my usual jazz station.

We owned a farm with sheep 'bout 40 kilometers from town. I remember her speaking different than some Australians.
I think? my ancestors were political prisoners when Australia was settled. My distant great, great..Etc ..grandfather was an English first mate on one of the first ships. Or so the story goes.

Anyway, that's why I sometimes say potahto.

I've always suspected it was false balance created to rhyme with to-mah-to for that song.

... but I imagine it was a more common pronunciation in 1935 than it is in 2015.

There is no h in the correct pronunciation though wah-pah-toe.
