The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsTonight we made our first Bloody Mary.
We usually have Jameson, ice cubes with a splash of water.
We like the Bloody Marys. Anyone have a recipe for Marys they want to share?

(10,337 posts)Even better if you pickle your own.
A shot of Vodka
A dash of Tobasco
A dash of Worchestershire
A little fresh ground pepper
Some ice
Clamato juice to fill
A few pickled Asperagus tips
stir
enjoy
You must be young or you would already know this.

(2,805 posts)Do they come in a can or a jar? Are they in the gourmet aisle or the drinks mix section? I'm not young but I never heard or saw these. Would they be good in a salad? (I hate tomato juice, so I'm not making a Bloody Mary.)

(10,337 posts)About twice a year, Asperagus is available for under $2.00 per #. On those rare occasions, I will buy enough to pickle. If you want to know how to do this, PM me and I will fill you in although if you are already not canning and putting food by you may find it a bit much, In that event, Oakra or olives make a good substitute

(65,066 posts)I don't care for them any more if some other base is used. Now, i'm a clamato nut as i go through about a gallon a week, just as a juice, but it does make a really good bloody mary

(65,066 posts)I take the jar of already crushed garlic, and dribble a little of the juice in there. Basically fresh garlic juice. Adds umami.

(10,337 posts)65 years on this earth, most of it lived in a gourmet paridise (the S F bay area) and now resigned to culinary hell (Tucson) and I have no idea what "celery salt " is.
gvstn
(2,805 posts)It is in every spice aisle. I love celery but don't salt so I haven't tried it.
I think it is like lots spice blends used to season meat before baking it, many are mixes of salt, celery and garlic powder maybe paprika. I believe celery salt is a plainer version with just two ingredients.
(I like this one with garlic powder to season roast beef before baking. I use a lot of it but it tastes good and is simple.
Actually it is ground celery SEED and salt.

(38,002 posts)It tastes good in tuna salad too.

(10,337 posts)I had to ask my daughter in law to send me Lumpfish Caviar from the Bay Area for my Salmon Mousse last year. Available at any grocery store in the bay area. Not to be found in Tucson. I had to order Alleppo pepper from Amazon for the Thanksgiving Sweet Potatoes because Tucson. This place is a culinary hellhole. Thank God for the internet.

(38,002 posts)Luckily, even though my Texas town is less than half the population of Tuscon, we have a splendidly healthy immigrant population. We have at least five international markets. I wish I could get to them more often but I don't drive and the bus trips are taxing.
Maybe celery salt is a Texas thing but I find a dash of it makes a bloody mary extra tasty where fresh celery just doesn't offer that kick.

Tucson is not culinary hell, but Marana probably is ...
celery salt is salt and ground celery seed, you can also buy the whole seed and grind it yourself. I can get that in Benson.

Well I love bacon!

(17,045 posts)I prefer wine. However, recently I had an amazing bloody mary at a dinner party with friends. They used beef broth, celery salt and FRESH horseradish ( along with the other stuff) It was so good I had two!

I had to personally carry the ingredients for this drink to Boston, for my company's Halloween party.
But you can also purchase them in Amazon (everything but the tequila). And make them wherever you want.
That's what I did when I visited our Seattle office.
