I loved all his movies, especially "Cool Hand Luke" - "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
"The Hustler" - "Somebody Up There Likes Me" - "The Verdict" - "The Color of Money" - and
"The Sting"
If I had to pick one, it would probably be "Fat Man and Little Boy" (1989)
(Feel free to list as many favorites as you want)

(14,498 posts)Those are three *best*.
All his work was good.
ETA: Hud.

(82,849 posts)"The Verdict" was a bit overlong, but I liked it. Best line for me was when Newman and his lawyer mentor Jack Warden are talking over the case:
NEWMAN: Who's the Diocese got?
WARDEN: Concannon.
NEWMAN: Hmmh. He's good.
WARDEN: "Good"!? He's the fuckin' prince of darkness!
James Mason was at his low-keyed menacing best in that one.
"Absence of Malice" is also an underappreciated movie.

(46,210 posts)I was transfixed the entire movie, a rare phenomenon.
THAT, my friends, was acting!

(3,275 posts)I love the "Long Hot Summer". Paul Newman is ridiculously handsome in that film. I love "The Sting". It is one of my favorite films. I also like "Slap Shot". It might be my favorite sports movie. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" was really wonderful. Paul Newman was just a great actor and apparently a nice person.

(12,328 posts)Newman was very sexy in that film, playing opposite his love, Joanne Woodward!

(25,816 posts)from his products to charities. All of it. I still use Newman's Italian salad dressing.
His wife, Joanne Woodward is a great actress as well.
One of my faves. All of his films were good.

(27,866 posts)You're right about him being a life-long Democrat.
For his support of Eugene McCarthy in 1968 (and effective use of television commercials in California) and his opposition to the Vietnam War, Newman was placed 19th on Richard Nixon's enemies list, which Newman claimed was his greatest accomplishment.

(20,219 posts)money than his movies. He also let his daughters know, early on, that they would not be getting an inheritance. He did end up leaving each of them $500K though. The rest was split between the Newman's Own Foundation and his wife Joanne.

(27,866 posts)But I did find this:
"Inside the Family Battle for the Newman's Own Brand Name"
http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2015/07/paul-newmans-own-family-feud-susan-newman
(From the Vanity Fair article)
"When Paul Newman died in 2008, he left his Newman's Own food empire, and the charitable foundations it supports, in the hands of his advisor Robert Forrester.
But his eldest daughter says the family believes their father's principles are being betrayed."
TexasBushwhacker
(20,219 posts)What it boils down to is that he mades changes to his will just months before he died, choosing to leave more money for Joanne's support and that money wouldn't be going to his daughters' foundations until after Joanne's death. I think his daughters, especially Nell, expected to have more control over the company and the Newman's Own Foundation. I don't think they were expecting a lot of cash.

(14,276 posts)It's either that or "The Verdict" for me.
Glorfindel
(9,737 posts)A practically perfect cast, with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Lee Remick, Tony Franciosa, Angela Lansbury, and Orson Welles. But, really, Paul Newman could have read the phone book and I'd have listened to him.

(26,117 posts)And "The Sting" is a fave of mine.
PufPuf23
(8,840 posts)Newman directed and starred along with Henry Fonda.
The film is based upon Ken Kesey's novel of the same name.
The story is of an Oregon family of gypo loggers.
Brother Buzz
(36,469 posts)so I guess it's fair to say those two wonderful movies are at the top of my list.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,380 posts)The film that sparked his love affair with motor racing. Beautifully shot and one of the three or four great racing movies of all time. (The others are "Le Mans", "Grand Prix" and "Heart Like a Wheel". "Days of Thunder" doesn't hold a candle to these)
Also "Absence of Malice" was excellent
When I worked in Indy Car Racing in the 90's I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Newman every race weekend. Though he tended to keep to himself and avoid attracting crowds, he was always kind and good hearted. He was known for never giving autographs but I had the opportunity to get him to sign a helmet that was to be auctioned for charity. When I asked if he would be so kind to sign it, he said "sure! Just drop it by the coach" (the team motor home).
He was well loved and respected by everyone in the race paddock.

(52,791 posts)He really walked the walk when he could have coasted. Never left his wife for a younger model, donated all profits of his grocery line to charity.. A talented and nuanced actor.. and, of course,

(46,179 posts)I saw "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" so many times I could repeat the script line by line along with them...not that there was any long, complicated dialogue, lol.
Just because it's an icon from my youth, that has to be my favorite.
2nd in line...Cool Hand Luke

(78,249 posts)Actually, I have a favorite Newman memory. Mom took me to see The Sting when I was what we would now call a tweener, and to The Ships in downtown Westport, Conn. (Paul's home town!) afterward.

(65,213 posts)Cat On A Hot Tin Roof is pretty good. Boy, is he good looking in that movie!
I really, really like Absence of Malice. I usually don't like anything with Sally Fields in it, but that one is really good. Melinda Dillon is really good in that. I'll watch the whole movie just for that scene where Wilford Brimley shows up from D.C. to find out what the heck is going on.
Your choice of "Fat Man..." was unexpected, but i don't disagree.
red dog 1
(27,866 posts)but the script, the directing, and the acting is superb!
As you probably already know, it was based on the true story of the development of the Atomic Bomb,
Paul Newman is outstanding as General Leslie R. Groves.
The rest of the cast is great as well; including John Cusack, Laura Dern and Dwight Schultz as Robert Oppenheimer.
I'be probably seen "Fat Man" at least 40 times.
