Interesting history of the Statue of Liberty - Frederic Bartholdi wanted to build a statue to sit at the entrance of the Suez Canal and drew the above sketch. Alas, not enough interest so Bartholdi did a little tweaking here and there and sold another statue idea to the American public and the French .

(16,296 posts)From the Wikipedia (poor source BTW) article you cited:
"Bartholdi took no immediate action on the idea (of an American statue) except to discuss it with Laboulaye. Bartholdi was in any event busy with other possible projects; in the late 1860s, he approached Isma'il Pasha, Khedive of Egypt, with a plan to build a huge lighthouse in the form of an ancient Egyptian female fellah or peasant, robed and holding a torch aloft, at the northern entrance to the Suez Canal in Port Said. Sketches and models were made of the proposed work, though it was never erected"

(16,296 posts)Conservatives are constantly rewriting or editing with their own twist on bio's of Reagan, Bush, etc. Granted this article has decent references.
Ironically, I quote from Wiki:
Wikipedia is a wiki, meaning that anyone can edit any unprotected page and improve articles immediately for all readers. You do not need to register to do this. Anyone who has edited is known as a "Wikipedian" and, no matter how trivial the edit may seem, can be proud that he or she has helped make Wikipedia what it is. All of these edits add up! Wikipedia uses two methods of editing: the new VisualEditor (VE), and classic editing through wiki markup (wikitext).

(15,659 posts)There are no sources that are completely accurate. Wikipedia has been found to be just as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica, and in some cases more up to date.

(16,296 posts)And I would like the reference that Wiki is "just as accurate as Encyclopedia Britannica". I still stand that Wiki should be taken with a grain of salt:
