New(ish) folk music

Contrary to popular DU wisdom, there is a flood of current musicians putting out great folk music, either traditional stuff, or Dylan/Guthrie style songs, or weird blends of folk with punk, or rap or other styles.

Spirit Family Reunion - Woody Guthrie

I also want to live in Woody Guthrie's America.

William Eliot Whitmore - Hell or High Water

Can you believe this is the voice of a 30-year-old?

Beck - Stagger Lee

Beck cut his teeth on Mississippi John Hurt, and this is a straight cover of Hurt's version. But a good one!

Kacy & Clayton - Henry Martin

Just discovered this Canadian folksinging duo, and they're wonderful. Old traditional English ballad.

Abigail Washburn - Nobody's Fault But Mine

Smoky voice, flawless clawhammer, reverberant space - what could be better?

Whiskey Before Breakfast

A trio of session pros nailing this traditional fiddle tune to the wall.

Some music is hard to pinhole into genres, but give the Avett Brothers a try sometime. I would describe them as folky, bluegrassy, rocky and country.

Peace

I tend to think of bands like them and OCMS as "rock bands with stringband instruments," but I honestly couldn't tell you what the distinction is. Maybe just that they're relatively high profile and successful. I know they play some traditional genuine folk music in their live shows.

They sound good.

And I always like a good guitar+mando duo.

Thanks!
