(17,742 posts)not very gustatorily satisfying, but fun.
Cheeze Whiz on Ritz crackers.
Cocktail weiners wrapped in Pillsbury cresent dough.
Lots of green olives with pimento.
Anything with Jello. In fact, everything with Jello. But call it aspic or something fancy.
Shrimp cocktail, of course.
I'll keep thinking.

(146,218 posts)Cocktail wienies wrapped in dough
Lipton onion soup mix made into a dip with potato chips
Chex mix (you had to make it yourself)
And I think melted Velveeta with a can of Rotel tomatoes as a hot dip (but that might have been later)
And, of course, fondue was huge.

(4,833 posts)onion soup mix, and a pint of sour cream. Ruffles, or something like them, to dip into it. Or, if you can find them in the cracker section, something called "Bugles".
To go upmarket a bit, get some faux caviar (typically white fish, or even salmon roe), smear some chopped up hard boiled eggs on top of a Ritz cracker, top with some "caviar".
Shrimp cocktails were big too. The bigger the shrimp the better. They must be chilled. And bottled "cocktail sauce" is fine. The red stuff. With horseradish in it.
Oh, and it was hard to go wrong with Ritz crackers.
ohiosmith
(24,262 posts)Love the Bugles idea.

(3,469 posts)If you are crafty or have a crafty friend, you could probably tranform a plate and bowl to look like Pete's chip n dip. You should serve Utz potato chips though.
AnneD
(15,774 posts)or neufchatel with a can of drained crushed pineapple (small can) mixed and let set a few hours to marry. Shrimp cocktail, Ritz crackers, cocktail wieners in sauce or pigs in a blanket, a bowl full of Ruffels and lots of cocktail fixins' (Mimosa's, Sours, Old Fashioned, Rob Roy's, Slo Gin Fizz, Tom Collins, straight ups, and regular Martini's but NO Margaritas please). Plenty of ice. Jello is too low rent but a nice coconut cake would be nice.
That should do it....Now where is my invite!

(12,132 posts)was once going out of town with my boss and the head of another department to meet with the IT people of a company we were about to merge with and we stayed at a pretty fancy hotel that had a couple bars and we stayed up all night drinking rye Manhattans and smoking Arturo Fuente cigars out in the courtyard of the hotel.
I'm gonna build a bar just so I can have bottles of rye and other alcohol on hand in case we ever get to have manhattans and cigars again. I mean, I can have some bottles sitting on the counter I suppose but wouldn't a bar be so much cooler? Yeah, that would be cool.

(24,262 posts)While the front of the package was simple and understated, the rest of the Zonkers box was completely covered with absurdist copy, accompanied by illustrations, informing the reader everything from how to wash Zonkers to how to mate them. The bottom of the box explained how to determine if it were indeed the bottom: Open the top, and turn the box upside down. If the Zonkers fall out, this is the bottom. If they fall up, this is the top. If nothing happens, this box is empty.
World-class illustrators became a part of the Zonkers phenomenon. Airbrush artist Charlie White illustrated the front of the Circus box while Seymour Chwasts work decorated the rest. White also illustrated a giant Zonkers circus poster, inspired by more of Katzs copy. The poster was offered on the circus box for $2.95 to include shipping, handling, and profit. The circus box ended up being
displayed in the Louvre in Paris.
