(4,033 posts)this past Saturday. The oldest Marine present is 5 weeks short of his 90th Birthday. He was cutting up the rug, doing the Polka and Waltzes. Our speaker was Retired USMC General David Papak.
A good time was had by all.

(17,202 posts)It's interesting that the USMC was established before the US Navy, since marines were used mostly aboard ships. The reason, my brother (retired Gunnery Sergeant) tells me, is because they were put aboard merchantmen and privateers before we had any purpose-built warships. Of course, capital ships still have Marine contingents to this day, mostly to serve the Master-at-Arms.
Nevertheless, the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry, remains the oldest organized force still on the modern US military roster.
