Things are getting really slow where I currently work and there is talk of lay-offs. It's an industry-wide deal. We haul scrap metal and currently the scrap metal market is dead. It has to do with the strength of our currency making our exports less attractive, and the decline in the Chinese economy. It turns out that China is a huge consumer of American scrap metal. Not so much now days, though. Prices have fallen through the floor and demand is still low.
I do have a business degree. Unfortunately, I can't find anyplace to put it to use. I've been trying for nearly a year. So I think I'm going to truck it up elsewhere.
There is a huge trucking company in a nearby city that has a need for a local flatbed driver. I'd be driving around the area making local deliveries all day. It pays $2.20 on the hour better to start than what I have now and I've been at my current employer for almost 5 years. I should also get more hours. My overtime is pretty much gone and I rely on it to help pay the bills.
I still need to talk to the local manager before they give me the green light. But I'm more than qualified for the position and I think I'll get it if I want it after I've talked to the manager.

(9,899 posts)Have you ever considered tanker work?

(10,418 posts)As a matter of fact, I have another lead on a job hauling a tanker and I do have a tanker endorsement.
I haven't heard anything yet. Hopefully, I'll have more to report after today. Thank you.
