The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm going to run in a 5K. it would have been absurd
this time last year, because I was on the coffin nails.
I quit smoking, and I know I sound like an idiotic commercial, but it has been such a great benefit to my life.
I can do things that I did in my teens (one of which was running in a 5K) and not be even the slightest bit phased.
Please under the sun and all that is holy, find another way and quit the cigarettes. They are depriving you of a hell of a lot of things.
I'll get off of my soapbox now.

(9,527 posts)I'm having to skip my yearly 5k this year due to knee surgery recovery, but I will participate in the 1k walk they have since it's a charity event.
Although I want to know who decided having a 5k in Boston in December was a good idea. I'd like to poke them with a pointy stick.

(39,961 posts)I had the hardest time in heck to get over my under-pronation because my feet are so narrow.
Once I got some 8AA's, it was far less stress on my knees because I didn't need to additional compensate for the bad fit.
Boston in December, though, let me just make a statement. There are hills to climb, and then there are hills that take the best out of the best. I don't know the route of that race, though so if you aren't going up the hill, at least that is something.
Best of luck with your surgery, I hope to see you out there

(22,756 posts)I'd say you deserve that soapbox! I ran my first 5k on my 60th
it was more of a hill sprint here in Vermont
I will never be a runner, I am a 'hiker' but will try a Turkey Trot in a few weeks

(14,061 posts)Congrats on both ditching the cigarettes and entering a race. And good luck and have fun -- 5K's a great distance to get yourself back into the sport. You'll find you'll want to do more and more of them.
