NEW YORK (gP) - "Let's go, Mets! Let's go Mets!" The tiresome chant echoes down the gate at LaGuardia where Mets fans in full regalia board the plane for the flight to Kansas City. "The Mets have this in the bag!" observes one fan, identifying himself as "Vinnie from Queens, you got a problem wid dat?" "Thor is going head-hunting, and he doesn't have to bat," says his companion Sal. "I bet he strikes out 27 of those bums."
By the reckoning of most, the World Series ended after five games when the Kansas City Royals staged another impossible late inning rally to beat the New York Mets 7-2, clinching the title four games to one. But most folks aren't die-hard Mets fans like Vinnie, Sal, and the others heading west. "Those other games, they didn't really count. I mean, what if that guy didn't hit that ninth inning homer off Familia in Game 1? The Mets woulda won!" said Tony, displaying impeccable parallel universe logic. "And those other games, when the Mets were ahead? They could have all gotten rained out before the last innings, and New York would have totally won them," said Tony's girlfriend CanDi.
"I heard the Royals aren't even gonna show up! And can you blame 'em? They'd get their asses kicked!" exulted Vinnie as the Mets faithful take their seats.
