I am supposed to do this before having an abdominal ultrasound to check for gallstones tomorrow.
I cannot think of anything I could possibly eat that would taste good in the absence of butter/olive oil. I'm already steering clear of a lot of spices because of the recent attack, which is incredibly boring. In any case, how do you cook anything without some kind of oil in the pan? Is that even possible? I guess a sauce of some kind maybe. Or resort to canned soup as I have been for days now. I'm inclined to just not eat at all, or to just eat bread, applesauce and bananas.
I think if I had to live like this all time, I couldn't. I'd take my chances.

(14,691 posts)try salad with flavored vinegar or lemon juice. Fresh fruit.
It doesn't help to think about not being able to eat like this for the rest of your life because, you're not being asked to do that. You'll be asleep for part of the 24 hours anyway.

(16,245 posts)But baking is a good idea. I'm thinking rice with something. I am not a good or imaginative cook. I can follow directions in a recipe and things come out well, but if I have to improvise by getting rid of the fat in a recipe, I have no idea how to do it. I feel a little panicky even thinking about trying to improvise. I get panicky at the store when I can't find an ingredient a recipe calls for, having no idea what to substitute.

(13,871 posts)Doctor said that was probably what it was, and that a low fat - or no fat - diet would help avoid another attack, or if I did have another bad one I could always have my gallbladder removed. The day after all I could find to eat was Rice Krispies with Splenda and fat-free milk, so that diet didn't last long.
I did have two more attacks before I went ahead and had the surgery.
One thing I did learn was how to get to the head of the line in the ER: walk in hunched over, and barely be able to get out the words "Can't hardly breathe, hurts bad." I was in a wheelchair and hooked up to heart monitors before they even asked for my insurance card.
Good luck. The surgery is well worth it considering the level of pain caused by the stones.

(971 posts)I started having the worst problems when I cut the fat in my diet. The doctor said that often happens. Hospitalized three times, the last one to remove it after finding stones wedged in the duct (VERY painful). There is also a school that says it runs in families. Try to avoid the pain if possible, if you can.
That said, I've just gotten through the prep regimen for a lower G.I. procedure, and was on clear liquids only for one day followed by nothing at all for 12 hrs. My intake consisted of a glass of apple juice and a couple cans of Sprite for the first day, followed by The Drink From Hell (the less said the better). If you can handle it, you might just want to skip everything but raw fruits and veggies, and not a lot of that. Just plan something really good for afterward, and keep yourself fixed on that?
