Among a series of other accidents, roughly 4,000 nails spilled across the eastbound lanes of the Dumbarton Bridge when two vehicles crashed at the midpoint of the span around 7:30 a.m., the CHP said. Two lanes of the bridge were blocked while the crews scrambled to clean up the mess.

So at last we have the answer to the age-old question of why the chicken crossed the road -- to get away from the damn nails!
