I wanted to make a whimsical, somewhat cheerful Halloween card. The house I used for a model was a townhouse in Charleston, SC. I simply "chopped off" the other houses and decided to haunt the one I had chosen.
My mom, being the good sport that she was, modeled for the witch. She wore a rain hat which I put a point on and a nightgown with a belt around it. Her prop was the kitchen broom.
All the little details like the squirrel, spider, trick-or-treating mice, and pumpkins in the window were all part of making it more "Halloweeny".
The cat was my own Maine coon tabby, Matthew-Pufftail.
Media used: colored pencils with magic marker blender, pen and ink.

(2,825 posts)Saw a photo in Southern Living magazine. The tree still had leaves, but the lighting was all about autumn. At first the drawing was done without the witch, cause I wanted as much of the late afternoon light in there as possible. Then I did a second drawing including the witch and I just thought her presence made it more fun.
I do think the color pallet was mostly dictated by the light. I did get rid of the cobblestone walk (too busy) and I stuck in the yellow mums.
Hope this explanation makes sense.

(6,719 posts)It is a lovely card -- Halloweeny and cheerful and autumny. Nice. Good job!

(2,825 posts)Even though I "gave" Mom long white hair in this drawing, in real life she was the farthest thing from scary.

(2,825 posts)But she was a wonderful and kind nurse. She wanted me to also be a nurse. Problem was I got very squeamish when I formed raw hamburger patties. By the time I was thirteen
we both agreed I did not have the makings of a nurse! LOL

(2,825 posts)The mice could have been wearing costumes--that , in my mind, would have been going over the line into "cute".
Thanks for your input.

(1,787 posts)And I have no artistic genes in my body (too much math based.)
But do painters and drawers need a model? Can you do it the same without or does it really help? I always wondered about that.
Thanks for any replies.

(2,825 posts)The tree, the house, My Mom (the witch LOL) and the big black cat who is really my Maine Coon Tabby were taken from real life. I had to look very carefully at the way the golden sun illuminated the house. From these starting places the fun began.
When I was a freshman in college taking drawing classes, our subject matter was endless bottles and nudes. It was repetitive and boring, but I guess some sort of foundation was being laid. Like learning the alphabet and training the eye. The creative stuff came later.
I would never take someone's photo and paint it just as I saw it, unless someone asked me to do a portrait of their children or pet.

It's a must for Halloween and I love spiders and their intricate web designs.
Your spider may be eyeing up that squirrel. I love it.
And then that mouse with the pumpkin - very cute.

(37 posts)This is beautiful, and reminds me of New England, where I live. Made my day! I love the little mice... (I'm constantly relocating the "mice-in-residence" here).
You are very gifted. Thanks for sharing your talent. WELL DONE!

(2,825 posts)I use a shoe box with a little opening. I fill it with bird seed and a small stalk of celery. When I hear noise inside, I seal the opening shut and release the mouse or mice back in the woods with plenty of seed and the stalk of celery.

(11,945 posts)NCarolinawoman, this is the kind of drawing that could keep me captivated for hours as a child. I was sorry to see that you aren't up to doing as much art, because I was going to say that you could be one of the best children's stories illustrators. I don't have talent, but the art classes I took in high school taught me how to see and love the world with my eyes, and that has stayed forever. I think artists like you pass that love on to the viewer.
It's funny, like you I choose to put spiders outside, although I'll kill black widows in self defense -- but not always. When my cat brings in a poor mouse or bird, if it's still alive, I'll catch it and take it outside (not too much fun in the middle of the night, though.) Also like you, my mother, a nurse, wanted me to be a nurse, but I too am ridiculously squeamish, can't even watch when they draw my blood. Lol, it's nice to not be the only one.
Thank you so much for sharing this exquisite drawing. It's such a pleasure to look at.

(11,945 posts)Today on NPR's Fresh Air, Terry Gross interviewed Tracey Stewart (Jon's wife), who runs a farm animal sanctuary and has written a book titled, Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better. Terry Gross expressed how much she loved the illustrations, and I could tell that she loved children's book illustrations as much as I did. The illustrator, Lisel Ashlock, was also on the show and Terry interviewed her as well. Some of her drawings can be seen on the Amazon preview, and they're nice, but I like your drawings better.
Here's a link to the program on Fresh Air website: http://www.npr.org/2015/11/03/454118317/for-tracey-stewart-life-after-the-daily-show-is-all-about-the-animals
And here's the Amazon page for it: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1579656234/
Also, I just noticed that we both have FDR as our avatar. The ideological similarities between him and Bernie Sanders is one of the reasons I'm favoring Bernie for the Dem Primary.
