Here's one for the NY Deadheads, MSG is next week.
Munificence
(493 posts)for the show in Nash for Nov 18th. An old high school friend that I have not seen in 30+ years is driving 300 miles to see the show. I found out through Facebook. I was able to get tickets for the wife and I right next to him and his wife.

(7,661 posts)The last time I saw them was in 94 at the Nassau Coliseum. By some miracle I won two tickets to the show at MSG on the 7th. All my Dead Head friends have moved away so I may take my sixteen year old daughter. Wish I was able to go to the Fare thee well but with my issues and lack of funds it was not to be. Once again enjoy the show!!!

(54,408 posts)I'm talking 1967!! No one in the East had seen the Dead live yet, and no one had told us they were all on speed when they recorded it on their first album, so we played it at that fast tempo. I did keyboards with my right hand and keyboard bass with my left hand (before I had ever heard of Ray Manzarek!), and I harmonized with our lead guitarist on the break note for note.
When I finally heard the Dead live in 1970, I was complete disoriented at the slower tempo of the song. My first reaction was, "why did they do that to their song?" What we didn't realize back in 1967 was that they had always intended it to be that tempo, and that their record was where it was at the wrong tempo.

(7,661 posts)that they were on speed at the time. Kind of makes sense. Thanks for that little tidbit.

(54,408 posts)I couldn't explain it either! My first reaction to the slow version when I heard them live was WTF? But I figured there must be some explanation, and sure enough, there was!
