Kitteh #2 is tougher...but it's so much easier when you don't try to control

The other kitteh I was drawn to on Tuesday was indoor only and already gone to a new home by Wednesday -- not a surprise and I told them right from the get-go, that was fine, fine, fine. And asked them to pick out a 2nd kitteh for me.

First they decided on Bashful -- a shy longhaired, black kitteh. I was fine with that and they pulled the paperwork, only to discover that Bashful's rabies expired yesterday so wouldn't be available until Friday. I was good to wait until Friday or they could pick out somebody else now.

They commenced discussions while I wandered around looking at kittehs. I thought I heard the name "Kaplan" and my heart went pitty-pat. He's a gorgeous dark grey/black tiger with mittens and blue-green eyes. I heard the name "Charger." Then I heard "the one-eyed cat" and I was fine with that, too. A short time later, a one-eyed black cat wandered out, but they were still discussing which kitteh would be best.

They settled on Charger. One person was very unhappy about that...she loves Charger and didn't want him to leave. I suspect the more she tried to hold on, the more the manager decided Charger was the best one.

Charger was part of a feral colony and picked up about 8 months ago, at age 6-8 months. He's very shy of people, but will allow you to scritch his ears. He gets very attached to other cats. Small-medium sized, medium-length hair, charcoal grey with buff tiger striping and blue-green eyes. My very own grey-tiger grumpy cat.

When we came home last night, he was pretty freaked out. I put Oaksley in the dog crate first, and then tried to put Charger in. He attacked Oaksley and made a run for it. I was able to get hold of him and get him in the crate and get the door shut. Poor little Oaksley ran around, but when I caught up with him as soon as I picked him up, he calmed down. Nobody injured except Charger managed to scratch me a little through 3 layers of sweats and is so strong he actually bruised my arm!

Yikes -- I put poor little Oaksley back in a carrier. Luckily I have a dog carrier, smaller than the crate, but much roomier than the cat carriers. So I set that up in a hurry, and Oaksley spent the night in there. I left the carrier and crate at right angles, so the kittehs could see each other.

The name Charger seemed to fit last night. Not so much this morning. He's calmed way down and Oaksley moved in with him this morning. I've been able to skritch his ears several times. He seemed depressed first thing, but seems to be coming out of it now that Oaksley is there with him.

No name is coming to me. I keep thinking Lord of the Underworld, God of the Sea, maybe Thundergod. Neptune? Marduk? Thor? Odin? Kahai? Haikili?

I kind of wanted a Maine Coon...another perfect kitteh in my 2nd color choice when I was dreaming. Hopefully he'll bond enough with Oaksley to stick around...

may help him calm down. As for names, Game of Thrones has some great names, although people are using these names for their kids too! The trend now for cats and dogs is to give them human names.

unfortunately I don't have power in the barn and it's very open and airy, so the diffuser won't work there. And the wire dog crate doesn't have much surface for the spray or wipe.

But the spray or wipe will be helpful when it's time to get him his rabies shot in February. In the meantime, it's ok. We have all the time he needs to feel safe and secure. Not going any where.

He was looking brighter this morning. He accidentally forgot himself and looked like he was enjoying being skritched for a second...almost ready to purr, and then he caught himself and went back to grumpy face

Meantime I introduced the dogs, one at a time. Jake approached the crate cautiously. Oaksley went right up to him, reached through the wires and batted him on the face. Jake is a lover, so after a few minutes, I took Oaksley out of the crate and let them meet with me holding Oaksley, but no barrier. Odin/Thor/Neptune watched from where he was curled up in the back of the crate.

A little while later I let Luna have a turn. He was afraid to come in the tackroom. I practically had to drag him over to the crate. Oaksley seemed to realize he was afraid, so didn't bat him at all. Instead, rubbed against him, purring. I left Luna in loose in the tackroom while I mucked out the aisle (where the horses stay). At one point, Luna made his way along the side of the crate and checked out Odin/Thor/Neptune, who gave him a warning growl. That didn't surprise me and I was happy to see Luna back right off. Once Luna accepts them into his pack, he will protect them with his life, but until then he needs to be kept in his place. I caught him gently licking Oaksley a couple times, so they're off to a great start to.

Oaksley has also seen the horses from a distance and I took him to the door so he could see them closer. Maizie saw him clearly for the first time -- her eyes got huge! There's a good chance she's never seen a kitty before...
