The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forums40 years ago today one of the greatest albums EVER was released!!!
Any band would be damn luck to release an amazingly epic album of this incredible awesomeness. But to put it into perspective this was probably the THIRD greatest album in the Pink Floyd collection, behind 'Dark Side of the Moon' and 'The Wall'. To be honest I've found most Pink Floyd purists find this album to be the better than those other two since DSotM and Wall seem to be more over-commercialized mainstream whereas WYWH is more Pink Floyd at it's absolutely crazy diamond progressive purist best.
The inspiration of the album title and songs were from that of the former member of Pink Floyd and founding member Syd Barrett who left soon after Pink Floyd released their first album some 8 years early.
So here is some DU reading material for today. Turn up that volume loud and enjoy!!

(12,723 posts)The fact that it delivered three radio staples, everything other than the nine parts of shine on you crazy diamond is a testament to the quality.
The Wall is behind DSoTM, Meddle, Animals, and Wish You Were Here to me.

(22,271 posts)Pink is the greatest band ever. There isn't one of their albums I haven't bought at least twice.

Edit note: Pink Floyd does make my top 3 though! LZ, Queen, Floyd, Yes, ELO

(33,688 posts)this odd, portly fellow who had shaved his eyebrows off turned up in the studio. It took the band a while to realize it was Syd. He heard they were recording and came by "ready to do his bit" and when asked about his weight gain said he'd "been eating a lot of pork chops lately." Roger apparently freaked out pretty badly and Dave gently thanked him and talked him into going back home.
Creepy synchronicity.
And I bought WYWH on the day it came out.

...but for some reason they fell off my radar. Years later I purchased PULSE when it came out, liked it ok. It turns out that my favorite Pink Floyd song, Astronomy Domine, was written by Syd Barrett. Barrett is seen here singing and playing guitar while performing that song back in 1967:
My first concert, (Berlin Germany, 1971) was supposed to be Chicago but they sold out at the venue they were scheduled for so my friend conned me into seeing Pink Floyd on that same night at a smaller venue. Further thanks to the wonders of YouTube, below is that very concert in all it's glory:

(7,208 posts)I must have played it a few hundred times during junior and senior year in high school. At least it wasn't Ratt's "Out of the Cellar"

(57,489 posts)I had thought they were both from 1974, but only the Badfinger album is from that year.
Really great group. As usual,
Although the album received a favourable review in Rolling Stone magazine and is sometimes considered to be the band's best work, it was withdrawn from record stores in early 1975, seven weeks after release, because of a lawsuit between Warner music publishing and Badfinger's management. The album's abbreviated manufacturing run and short tenure on the market has made the original LP relatively rare.
Bonus track, from another 1974 Badfinger album:
By the way, which one is Pink?
