I attended a five-day aurora and fall colors photo workshop in the Brooks Range near Wiseman, Alaska, last week, and we were lucky enough to have two clear nights with the Lights. This area was bounded by Gates of the Arctic National Park on the west and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to the northeast, about 270 miles north of Fairbanks on the Haul Road (Dalton Highway) made famous by the original Ice Road Truckers. I have a lot of photos to sort and edit, but here's a quick shot of the aurora from last Thursday night. The auroras were absolutely stunning and went on all night long, from dusk to dawn. Here's a quick shot; I'll post more scenes from up there in the coming weeks. The fall colors were amazing. The light here is from the full moon.

(54,408 posts)I stayed up til 3 AM last night at Denali State Park on one of the clearest nights of the year and saw ZERO Aurora Borealis. Zip, nada. There is no justice.

(46,436 posts)Make sure you have a wide open space, if you can. If the mountains are too close to you, the auroras might be behind them.

(46,436 posts)of course, since we're going to the Fair tomorrow. Will you have time to get over to Palmer? Our state fair is pretty fun. The giant vegetables alone are worth the price of admission.
