Tried installing a few days ago and it stayed stuck at the opening/pause. Today the pop-up saying it was ready for installation again happened, and it moved along lickety split (spit?!1). It seems to have kept my mail and other things, but haven't found my Favorites exactly. The big "e" for IE responds as "Microsoft Edge" instead and I haven't found the menu toolbar for the usual actions. Whoa, just imported "Favorites" from IE. Whoa, just found out how to enlarge the view/font to my normal 125%!1 Whoa whoa whoa!

(70,710 posts)a Notification offering to reserve a free Windows 10. I delayed from trepidation for a month, then Reserved. So a couple of weeks ago a Notification said my slot/copy was ready to be installed. I tried it, but an opening screen that was supposed to last ten seconds just went on and on so I cancelled. Today the "ready" Notification popped up again and this time it all went through the installation apace.
It looks crisp and clean in design and my old stuff/mail/software all seems to be there. I just haven't found things yet!1

(38,002 posts)Like IE is a web browser. I love Firefox. Many more people love the Google Chrome browser, as it is the most used browser at the moment.
UTUSN
(70,710 posts)I would go-Firefox just because you-word-is-gold to me. Otoh, "most used" means another opportunity for me to sell out to corporate interests. I've stuck with IE all these many years despite the occasional disdain from device connoisseurs. Right now, with Windows 10 I'm on Microsoft Edge? And I just got an e-mail from the Google phantom saying somebody had logged into my Google accounts from Microsoft Edge & was it me?!1 Yes, it was I. So this means I'm already irretrievably tangled in the Google nets like a whale, such that I might as well go Chrome?
Esteemed blogslut: Have you used both for comparison? Stop me, but I fear 'tis too late, am going it now.

(54,256 posts)I'd used Firefox with W-XP.
Liked it.
Tried it with W-10 and things didn't work so well.
Went back to Edge.

(70,710 posts)PC World's comparison of Firefox, Chrome, and IE:
* FF uses less memory, is more secure with user info = 10%
From FF's website: FF is non-profit = 5%
Just barely trying it now, I was able to find my Favorites in a single click/list instead of what Microsoft Edge was doing (whatever *that* was).
Thanks, blogslut!

(38,002 posts)Firefox comes from Mozilla. Mozilla is the non-profit arm of Netscape that literally rose from the ashes after having suffered practical extinction thanks to a buyout by AOL and the dominance of IE.
I like Firefox because it has numerous add-ons that allow me to block ads but mostly, to block scripts, which are supposed to be useful but often do nothing but slow websites to a crawl. I like Firefox because it is W3C compliant. I like Firefox because I can control it much easier than IE or Chrome.
However, when it comes to Win 10, the one thing that I think makes Win 10 cool is Cortana - or rather, the promise of what Cortana can do in the future. At the moment, all it can really do (by voice command) is give me the weather, a summary of the news and set reminders. My hope is that, in the future, Cortana will be more of a true virtual assistant and for it to do that, I will have to allow Microsoft Edge be my default browser because I seriously doubt Cortana will work in conjunction with Chrome or Firefox in an efficient way.
I have a tablet device running Windows 10. I have Windows 7 on my laptop.

(22,897 posts)Is there any reason to switch??
UTUSN
(70,710 posts)I can't give any tech reasons to switch, am an extremely low tech specimen. My basic reason for myself is to try the thing that is the next thing (in its own bubble). Perhaps it would be rid of whatever the eccentricities you found in 7?
So far it's been fairly intuitive at my level, have been able to wade into it.

(7,347 posts)Like you I had to do it twice, the first time it wasn't going anywhere after a few hours, so I quit & rebooted, tried again, worked fine.
It's taken a few days to get used to the changes but I like what I see so far...plus my computer seems to run a lot smoother now!

(70,710 posts)While the design/look is crisp and clean, in a Soviet Union era sort of way, the thin border on the window and the thin line graphics on the icons look like a kid's stick figure drawing. And the scroll column is way slimmer and harder to hold the cursor, and the scrolling tends to skid past fast.
I haven't found how to get my tool bar that has cut/paste/copy and Favorites. And while the vaunted "Start" feature is back from the 8, its icons-design for it is less appealing to me than 7's little list way. So far I've got to go to a Menu to get to all of my Docs/Pics/Favs.
Sounds like, despite liking it, I *don't* like it all that much?!1 Haha.

(149,636 posts)I have Windows 7 on both my laptop and desktop, and I plan to keep it until Microsoft no longer supports it. I love my Win 7 and see no reason to switch!

(1,307 posts).... like it's just fine. Much better than the 8's, no much different from 7.
