PORTSMOUTH, R.I. -- Brother Joseph Byron, a Benedictine Monk who works at the Portsmouth Abbey School, thought he knew at least one place in the world where he could enjoy some piece and quiet.
Portsmouth Abbey's wind turbine is 175-feet tall and when the school installed it in 2006, Byron stood on top of the structure and watched the sunset, according to the school's website. He's maintained the equipment ever since.
On a particularly hot Sunday morning two weekends ago, Byron climbed up to the top of the turbine (inside the mono-pole tower) and out onto the rear of the turbine housing to enjoy the cool breeze coming off Narragansett Bay.
Bryron had laid down on the flat surface of the big white turbine when he noticed a small unmanned aircraft with rotors and a camera -- a drone -- rising above him.
The drone hovered for a while shifting back and forth in the air watching him before descending back to earth, Byron said.
This week, Byron's summer peace was broken again as footage taken by that drone, which had belonged to a California man on vacation in Rhode Island, was posted on the website of the British publication Daily Mail.
That's funny. And kind of sad. Can't even find some peace on top of a wind turbine.

Alas, now it seems I'll have to include an automated paintball gun system to defend my privacy.
For now it ought to be easy enough to automatically distinguish between drones, birds, bats, and insects, so fear not, wildlife will be safe.
