And I mean this exact hybrid. It's super common. Pretty, too.

And has a green house full of them. I have no clue about varieties, but she seems to be good at getting them to grow and have flowers.

ETA - gorgeous photos!

It sounds like you know your stuff about orchids!

I live in Seattle and, during the winter, I only heat my living room, which doesn't have any decent light. I've had orchids before in my dining room, which has excellent light, but I don't keep it heated.

What's the secret to growing them and having them come back? I cut off the stems after they bloomed and died once and learned that was a no-no.

Any tips?

Im in the SF Bay, and I grow outside year 'round. I don't grow phalaenopsis (the kind in the VW), but a lot of Zygopetalums and related (like the kind in the first photo). Those two require very different cars!

As for cutting off the spike on phals once the blooms drop, it's fine. It lets the plant rest. Some people leave them, hoping to force a keiki off the old spike. And of course, don't cut spikes on Masdevallia infracta; it reblooms off old spikes.

What is the orange variety in pics 6-7 from the top? I'm pretty sure my mom gave me some of those, and while they seem healthy I'd like to know what they are to treat them appropriately...

Basic Catt care: high light, let go almost dry between waterings (this could be a day or a week, depending on your conditions), likes warmer temps, let it stay drier longer when it's cool and water more when in spike/flower.

No need to change. If its not blooming - more light.
