Does anyone else cut the rings of plastic six pack holders?

It used to be the thing to do, so birds or sea turtles didn't get them stuck around their neck and end up being strangled by them. Is this still necessary?

but like everyone else it is rare to have that opportunity. Sometimes six and eight packs of water bottles we get for a camping trip or something have them.

but sometimes it can't be helped. I have a pond in front of my house with tons of ducks. The squirrels like to drag the trash out of the bins (they even ate through the lids) so we are pretty careful on how we toss stuff out.
