I might have a glass of Sauvignon Blanc with a meal, or a gin and tonic after a day on the lake, but otherwise I stick to lemonade or ice tea.

out of a box...

Just finished checking the horses for the night and can finally sit and relax. I actually like the Black Box wine. Obviously I'm utterly unsophisticated but I'm home alone tonight and I'll have a glass of an old favorite with no need to impress anyone.

unplugged fans, shut all necessary doors, peeped at the horses turned out overnight, made sure the new arrival from this afternoon was calm in her stall and sashayed out.

Didn't spill a drop!

Evening barn check is almost always a very peaceful affair and happily done with a cold one in hand. I have 11 horses out to competitions this weekend so it's quiet here tonight. My three dogs are comfortably draped all over me at the moment. All's well in pastoral land...

10. Cajun Dirty Martini

I infuse a half-gallon of inexpensive but good-quality vodka (svedka, or New Amsterdam) with 5 habanero peppers, 7 seranno peppers and 1/2 red bell pepper. It sits on the counter for 3-4 weeks. Until it's very very hot. Very hot.

Cajun Dirty Martini:
Homemade pepper-infused vodka, 1/2 part. Or more if you like things scorching hot
splash olive juice from jar of jalapeno-stuffed olives
3 parts vodka
2 of those jalapeno stuffed olives for garnish
Shake, drink, repeat.

That vodka also makes a damn fine bloody mary.

I make it like that because I like both the pepper flavor and the heat. It took a few tries to get the balance, that's why I added the red bell pepper for a little bit of sweet. I've made the martini for other people who didn't like hot food, using only a little bit of the pepper vodka. It's still good.

I gave a pint to someone from work. He said he and one of his friends did shots. As much as I like hot, there's no way I'd do a shot of that. He did give me a great idea for steak. He marinated a steak in it and said it was the best steak he'd ever had.

So I tried it. I go shopping in the morning, and put a steak in the refrigerator in a bag of the pepper vodka. Leave it all day, and cook it that night. Just a little salt and pepper, then onto a screaming hot skillet. When the steak first hits the hot skillet (or grill), the aroma of hot pepper might scare someone who doesn't like hot, but the alcohol cooks out and medium rare it IS the best steak I've ever had. The pepper flavor remains, but it's not "hot".

Never tried it before, but after all the raves about it here I finally broke down and got a 6-pack today. I don't know the regular price, but it was on sale for $8.99. It better be good--I could have gotten a whole case of some beers for that!

I saw them last year when it was the 20th anniversary of Smash and I couldn't believe how strong of an album it still is, it has held up pretty well, met some cool people at the show too. Conspiracy Of One I didn't care for that much, Rise & Fall had some great tunes on it like Hammerhead and You're Gonna Go Far, Kid, and Days Go By is pretty good as well.

They did rock though and had a great show. It was a standing room only place and completely sold out, and it was nice to be in with the hometown fans. If you want to experience California, go to a show like that.

My homebrewed decaffeinated iced tea, because you can't buy decaf prefab iced tea in the store, and I put in the right amount of sweetener for my taste. Native Texan here. Iced tea is the year round Southern drink because it's so damned hot most of the time.

Yesterday it got to 101. The heat index was several degrees higher due to the humidity. Today was better; I think the humidity was low and it only got to 94.

me while I filled out my online social security app. Made mint iced tea from my back yard mint. I like it best as ice cubes in water or in mead. Local mead; we have numerous meaderies now.

Friday night and last night, frozen, slushy strawberry daquiri from supermarket I very rarely drink mixed drinks or anything other than sherry or mead, so I never have anything on hand. But a couple times in the summer indulge
