The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI'm starting a DU Bar with nothing but the best on tap. What do you recommend we put on tap?
I'll start.
First, my absolute favorite two beers
Because I can find it just about anywhere and everywhere here in Delaware: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA (Esquire Magazine called it possibly the best IPA in America!) http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/year-round-brews/90-minute-ipa.htm
And because sometimes it's harder to find and so much better when it is on tap Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout.

(18,470 posts)New Glarus Spotted Cow for one. (Of course the bar would have to be in Wisconsin then).
Schlafly makes some pretty good stuff too. (Yes the owner Tom Schlafly is a nephew of that Schlafly. But he's cool, he's a Democrat).
Backpocket Wooden Nickle and Gold Coin.
Dragon's Milk by New Holland Brewing.
LongTomH
(8,636 posts)Boulevard's Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale is a connoisseur's fine ale.
Beginning with a big surge of fruity aromatics and grapefruit-hoppy notes, the flavor of this complex, straw-colored ale tapers off to a peppery, dry finish.
Anything by Kansas City's Boulevard Brewery would be good on tap or bottled.

One year at Thanksgiving she set a 12 pack outside and the farm cats took notice of it right away.
Turns out it took a while to finish off that 12 pack too.

(95,337 posts)I tried to down some of that Dogfish Festina Peche Beer. I'd rather drink Coors light. But then again I have low tolerance for any kind of fruit beer.
I haz sad. I like peach beer.

(18,470 posts)And I wasn't much better, I drank mainly Old Style, Busch, Coors, or Budweiser back then.
We shared an apartment for a couple years and had an understanding, he could have beer I brought home as long as he didn't advertise it and he didn't go out after having beer. So he drank whatever I bought. When he turned 21 he was finally able to buy his own and would only buy Icehouse beers.
It could be said our tastes have evolved since then. He now makes his own beer and wouldn't touch Icehouse with a ten foot pole. I don't mind Coors or Bud Light every so often but I mainly drink local craft beers.
I had PBR once. Didn't really care for it.
My cousin and uncle both likes the really cheap beers. The Old Milwaukee, Keystone, Milwaukee's Best, etc. We give them both a real hard time about their choice of beers too.

(95,337 posts)We'll just go right straight to the very last slide and see who is ranked #1 ONE BABY
That's Delaware! We are the ones with the absolutely most innovated brewery in the United States putting out the craziest, best tasting, most sought after beers not just in the USA but even overseas. Heck even Robert Plant made a special visit to Delaware just to try our beer. He knows we're that good
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20121129/ENTERTAINMENT/121129013/Robert-Plant-son-stop-by-Dogfish-Head
So when it comes to beer - don't mess with Delaware. We got the balls to say we are that good!

(36,827 posts)In the Beer Advocate top 250 list, no Dogfish beer shows up till #240.
#69 on the list is in Texas and is awesome.
#89 is even better, IMO. Also from Texas.

I did a bit of research and found out Delaware is indeed a state, which means I need to land there in order to complete my bucket list of landing in all 50 states. In two weeks I'll be in Baltimore and from there I'll be going to the coast on my way up to Canada (which amazingly is not a state I'm told). So I'll be landing just north of the thriving metroplex of Middletown. I'm not sure there will be any of this famous Dogfish beer there, but if there is I'll have to pick up some for the airway.
Cheers!

(36,827 posts)I'm not sure what day I'll be there, but it will be sometime around Aug 20th. From the looks of it we probably won't be doing anything more than a touch and go so I can log a landing in Delaware. We have a long day of flying that day as we'll be going from Baltimore, to NYC, fly up the Hudson, then along the coast to Maine and up to the northern part of the state. With any luck we'll gets some good low level video footage of northern Delaware, so if you know of any good landmarks or gnarly scenery from the sky let me know.

(14,738 posts)...then I strongly recommend checking out beers from Siren Craft brewery in the UK
http://www.sirencraftbrew.com/
MRS Brown is the best bottled beer I've had this year (a beer you'll love if you like Palo Santo Marron), 10 Finger Discount is also quite possibly the best keg beer I've had this year. Broken Dreams and Soundwave are sensational cask ales. I could go on here. Siren Craft & Wild Beer Co are the two most exciting breweries over here right now, but Siren are more consistently outstanding.

CASK
Oakham Citra - a strong candidate for best beer brewed in Britain
Crouch Vale Brewers Gold - a perennial personal favourite
Brass Castle Eclipse - From my current favourite brewery, a superb stout and the best cask ale I've had this year
Fullers Chiswick Bitter - because no list of cask ales is complete without a good quality old fashioned bitter
Siren Craft Soundwave - One of the best IPA's coming out of Britain, and it's at it's best on cask
Buxton Imperial Black IPA - the best black IPA I've ever had, and again, it's so much better on cask
Great Heck Amish Mash - another personal favourite, a hoppy wheat beer from one of the UK's best breweries
Thornbridge Cocoa Wonderland - a chocolate porter, great for the winter months
KEG
Jever Pilsner - because a list like this needs a lager type beer, and this is easily the best pilsner I've ever had
Kernel - pretty much any of their ever changing pale ales or IPA's
Siren Craft The Tickle Monster - A 12% tripe IPA aged on cedarwood, a big silly beer that's worth the high cost
Elgoods Coolship - Sour beers are much better suited to keg than cask and this one is very good
Hawkshead NZPA - a beer that's simply excellent on keg
BOTTLE
Wild Beer Co Modus Operandi - in my opinion, the best UK sour beer right now
Wild Beer Co Wildebeest- a big silly stout. I prefer the bottle to the keg for this one so it's on this section
De Molen Bloed, Zweet & Trannen - if you like smoked beers then this the beer for you
Siren Craft MRS Brown - the aforementioned excellent beer that I've been drinking plenty of recently
I'll think of more beers in due course I'm sure

(11,760 posts)I also enjoy many of Flying Dog's offerings when I go see The Frederick Keys or Baltimore Orioles.
Dogfish Head has an Alehouse not too far away in Gaithersburg...
Besides those two local paragons of brewing excellence, I like Kasteel Donker from Belgium and Anchor Steam and Anchor Porter from San Francisco.
I've been going light on the beer though - lost 60 pounds over the last 4 months - on purpose......

(43,890 posts)Duchesse de Bourgogne is a Flanders red ale-style beer produced by Brouwerij Verhaeghe in Vichte, Belgium. After a primary and secondary fermentation, this ale is matured in oak barrels for 18 months. The final product is a blend of a younger 8-month-old beer with an 18-month-old beer. The name of the beer is meant to honor Mary of Burgundy, the sole daughter of Charles the Bold, born in Brussels in 1457, who died young in a horse riding accident. Like all Flemish red ales, Duchesse de Bourgogne has a characteristically sour, fruity flavor similar to that of lambic beers.
For a lot of people, The Duchesse de Bourgogne is the best beer in the world.

(14,738 posts)...then there's also Rodenbach from Belgium and Wild Beer Co Modus Operandi from the UK. Modus Operandi in particular is a big personal favourite of mine.
