If it's the Feds they automatically do a background check on all applicants. If it's in the private sector, I agree with the poster above, it's when they're considering you as a viable candidate.

contingent on the background check. That's how I knew I was going to get a job I'd applied for but hadn't heard anything for awhile. I was about to give up when I got a phone call from the checker-upper people, wanting some more information (I think it had to do with college but I don't exactly remember).

You have to sign an authorization permitting the employer to do a background check.

At least that has been my experience.

Some times it takes awhile.

I actually turned down one of the offers because it took them so darn long to get back in touch after the background check.

the position is with the state's attorney's office. They have their own investigators.
