First of all, I wanted to make people aware that home insurance companies in 19 states are creating separate deductibles for wind and hail damage. And some companies are paying claims on roof damage based on the age and value of the existing roof, not the cost of replacement. I got my renewal from Nationwide, in Ohio. I have a $1000.00 all-perils deductible, and freaking surprise! A $2500.00 wind and hail damage deductible. We had a derecho 3 years ago. I was unpleasantly surprised to find after the damage occurred that we had a $1200.00 deductible for storm damage. Nationwide didn't call me and tell me they were doing that. I didn't read my policy before I paid the premium. Needless to say, Nationwide did not cover the damage we had and now we will pay even more out of pocket if we have another derecho here. Actually any wind or hail damage.
I had to keep Nationwide because we had a rider on a property out of state. But we sold the other property recently and I'm looking for an insurance company that actually does its job, and isn't trying to recoup past losses by creating new ways to avoid paying out in case there's damage. (as an aside, I won't get any money from the sale of the property, it was left in trust for younger relatives).
I also found out a year or so ago that property insurance doesn't cover some types of damages. It varies from state to state and you should check your state's insurance exceptions, to avoid other nasty surprises. For instance, if a hillside slips, and ruins your home, it probably isn't covered by your insurance. So Google 'state property casualty homeowner insurance exceptions' if you want to know more about that.
I am to the point that I wonder why I pay insurance, if it isn't going to cover losses. That is what insurance is. I am willing to have a deductible, but the insurance companies, and in Ohio, The Ohio insurance Institute, touts the separate deductible as a way for homeowners to save money on their policies. But you don't save much and if you have to pay out (as in my case) $3500.00 for repairs, well, why have insurance? Nationwide did not ask me if I wanted that deductible, they just added it to my policy and then increased the size of the that deductible. I am really tired of companies offering a product or service and then adding to the cost with 'fuel surcharges' which aren't removed ever, delivery charges, which should be taken from the overall cost of the product, such as pizza, and insurance, which companies are allowed to choose which hazards they will cover, and which hazards they won't, which all too often seem to be the hazards we the homeowners most want covered, because they are the most likely to occur.
One other thing the insurance companies are doing is insuring your home for the 'replacement' value, not the actual value. There is a lawsuit based in Cincinnati going on. This approach allows the insurance companies to increase your rates without having to ask the state for permission to raise rates. Guess how that is affecting insurance company profits?
So all that said, can anyone recommend a property/casualty insurance company for property in Ohio? Thanks for reading and thanks for advice.

(22,845 posts)It's available in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and several other states.
We signed up with Erie for both homeowner and car insurance when we moved to Maryland 25 years ago and have never regretted it (knock on wood). It was recommended by Consumer Reports.
we can do it

You can also Google an insurance company for "lowest number of complaints"
and "highest rated"
tho you gotta make sure whatever ratings used are realistic.
